وقّع 19 من الفائزين بجائزة نوبل رسالة مفتوحة موجهة إلى الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، تحثه على مواصلة الضغط لتأمين إطلاق سراح ما يصل إلى 1300 شخص مسجونين في بيلاروسيا لأسباب سياسية.
جاءت الرسالة لتثني على ترمب الذي طرح القضية خلال مكالمة هاتفية مع الرئيس البيلاروسي ألكسندر لوكاشينكو الأسبوع الماضي، داعية إياه إلى بذل المزيد من الجهود.
وذكرت الرسالة: «نحثكم بكل احترام على مواصلة جهودكم النشطة لتأمين الإفراج الفوري عن جميع سجناء الرأي في بيلاروسيا، إذ لن يعيد إطلاق سراحهم العدالة للأفراد فحسب، بل سيفتح المجال أيضا للمصالحة والحوار».
ومن بين الموقعين على الرسالة الفائز بجائزة نوبل للسلام أوسكار أرياس، والأديبتان سفيتلانا أليكسيفيتش وهيرتا مولر، إلى جانب 16 فائزا بجوائز نوبل في الفيزياء والكيمياء والطب والاقتصاد.
كما دعا الموقعون إلى إسقاط الملاحقات القضائية ذات الدوافع السياسية، لتسهيل عودة البيلاروسيين الذين فروا إلى الخارج بأعداد كبيرة بعد أن قمعت قوات لوكاشينكو احتجاجات الشوارع الواسعة النطاق في عام 2020، التي اندلعت إثر انتخابات متنازع عليها.
وجاء تدخل ترمب المفاجئ يوم الجمعة الماضي بعد ساعات من إرسال الناشط المعارض البيلاروسي المنفي دميتري بولكونيتس بريدا إلكترونيا إلى الرئيس الأمريكي، يطلب منه مناقشة قضية السجناء البيلاروسيين خلال قمته في ألاسكا مع الرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين، الحليف المقرب من لوكاشينكو.
وكتب بولكونيتس في رسالته: «ننوي ترشيحكم لجائزة نوبل للسلام إذا نجحتم في تأمين إطلاق سراح السجناء السياسيين البيلاروسيين».
وأشار ترمب، الذي يدعي الفضل في حل ستة نزاعات دولية، إلى رغبته الواضحة في الفوز بجائزة نوبل.
وفي اليوم نفسه، أثناء توجهه إلى قمة ألاسكا، نشر على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي أنه أجرى محادثة رائعة مع الرئيس البيلاروسي الموقر، شاكرا لوكاشينكو على إطلاق سراح 16 شخصا، وناقش إمكانية الإفراج عن 1300 آخرين.
وأعرب عن تطلعه للقاء لوكاشينكو، الذي تعرض للعزلة من الدول الغربية لسنوات بسبب سجله في مجال حقوق الإنسان ودعمه للحرب الروسية في أوكرانيا.
وأكد بولكونيتس أن قرار ترمب بالتواصل مع لوكاشينكو كان ردا عفويا على بريده الإلكتروني، الذي أُرسل أيضا إلى عدد من مستشاري الرئيس.
وأوضح أن المكالمة تمت خلال ساعة أو ساعتين من إرسال الرسالة، مشيرا إلى أن ترمب استخدم العدد نفسه الذي ذكره في الرسالة بشأن عدد السجناء.
وأضاف: «لوكاشينكو الآن في موقف يجعل رفض طلب الرئيس الأمريكي أمرا غير مواتٍ له، مما يجعله قد يسعى لتسريع عملية الإفراج، والمهم هنا هو الحفاظ على هذا التركيز دون تشتيته».
ومنذ منتصف 2024، أفرجت بيلاروسيا عن مئات الأشخاص المحكومين بتهم «التطرف» وجرائم سياسية أخرى، في خطوة يرى المحللون أنها تهدف إلى تخفيف عزلة لوكاشينكو عن الغرب.
Nineteen Nobel Prize winners signed an open letter addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to continue pressing for the release of up to 1,300 political prisoners in Belarus.
The letter praised Trump for raising the issue during a phone call with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko last week, calling on him to make further efforts.
The letter stated: “We respectfully urge you to continue your active efforts to secure the immediate release of all prisoners of conscience in Belarus, as their release will not only restore justice for individuals but will also open the way for reconciliation and dialogue.”
Among the signatories of the letter is Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias, along with authors Svetlana Alexievich and Herta Müller, in addition to 16 Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry, medicine, and economics.
The signatories also called for the dropping of politically motivated prosecutions to facilitate the return of Belarusians who fled abroad in large numbers after Lukashenko's forces suppressed widespread street protests in 2020, which erupted following disputed elections.
Trump's unexpected intervention came last Friday, just hours after exiled Belarusian opposition activist Dmitry Bulkonez sent an email to the U.S. president, asking him to discuss the issue of Belarusian prisoners during his summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a close ally of Lukashenko.
Bulkonez wrote in his message: “We intend to nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize if you succeed in securing the release of the Belarusian political prisoners.”
Trump, who claims credit for resolving six international conflicts, indicated his clear desire to win a Nobel Prize.
On the same day, while heading to the Alaska summit, he posted on social media that he had a great conversation with the esteemed Belarusian president, thanking Lukashenko for releasing 16 people and discussing the possibility of releasing 1,300 more.
He expressed his eagerness to meet Lukashenko, who has faced isolation from Western countries for years due to his human rights record and support for the Russian war in Ukraine.
Bulkonez confirmed that Trump's decision to reach out to Lukashenko was a spontaneous response to his email, which was also sent to several of the president's advisors.
He clarified that the call took place within an hour or two of sending the message, noting that Trump used the same number mentioned in the letter regarding the number of prisoners.
He added: “Lukashenko is now in a position where refusing the U.S. president's request would be unfavorable for him, which may lead him to seek to expedite the release process, and the important thing here is to maintain this focus without distraction.”
Since mid-2024, Belarus has released hundreds of individuals convicted on charges of “extremism” and other political crimes, a move analysts see as aimed at easing Lukashenko's isolation from the West.
