The Syrian Foreign Ministry announced the agreement to "form a working group with Jordan and the United States to enhance the ceasefire in Suwayda.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, his Syrian counterpart Asaad al-Shibani, and the U.S. envoy to Damascus Tom Barrack held a meeting in Amman today (Tuesday). This is the second meeting in less than a month, following an initial encounter hosted by Jordan on July 19. The Jordanian Foreign Ministry stated via a post on its "X" platform account that the meeting also includes representatives from the relevant institutions in the three countries.
It added that the meeting discussed the situation in Syria and ways to support the rebuilding process in Syria on the foundations that ensure its security, stability, and sovereignty, meet the aspirations of its brotherly people, and preserve the rights of all Syrians.
It clarified that the meeting comes as a continuation of the discussions hosted by Amman on July 19, 2025, to discuss the stabilization of the ceasefire in Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria and to resolve the crisis.
In the meantime, representatives from the Kurdish self-administration and the Syrian government held a meeting in Damascus, continuing the negotiations between the two parties, following the government's announcement to boycott scheduled meetings between the sides that were set to take place in Paris.
A Kurdish source stated that the meeting took place on Monday evening at the request of the Syrian government between the prominent official in the self-administration, Ilham Ahmed, and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, adding that the discussions focused on finding a suitable decentralized formula, without specifying a timeline for its implementation. The source pointed out that the discussions aimed to emphasize the continuation of the negotiation process through Syrian-Syrian committees under international supervision. The two sides agreed that there is no place for a military option.
A Syrian government source confirmed the meeting between Ahmed and al-Shibani, without providing further details.
The two sides were supposed to meet in Paris in mid this month, based on an agreement made by the foreign ministers of Syria and France and the U.S. envoy to Damascus, following a meeting in Paris at the end of last month, to implement the terms of a bilateral agreement signed by Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara and the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi on March 10 under U.S. sponsorship.
However, the Syrian government announced that it would not participate in any scheduled meetings in Paris, following the expanded self-administration conference in Hasakah, which Damascus considered a "blow" to the ongoing negotiation efforts.
The Paris meeting was supposed to discuss the mechanism for integrating the SDF forces (which number about 100,000 personnel) with the internal security forces within the framework of the Syrian Ministry of Defense.
