أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب ترشيح الاقتصادي «إي. جيه. أنتوني» لتولي منصب مفوض مكتب إحصاءات العمل (BLS)، بعد 10 أيام من إقالة المفوضة السابقة إريكا ماكنتارفير، متهماً إياها -دون أدلة- بالتلاعب ببيانات سوق العمل التي أظهرت أداءً ضعيفاً، بحسب وكالة «رويترز».
«إي. جيه. أنتوني»، الذي يشغل حالياً منصب كبير الاقتصاديين في مؤسسة هيريتيج، وهي مركز أبحاث محافظ بارز، عُرف بانتقاداته الحادة لمكتب إحصاءات العمل، التابع لوزارة العمل الأمريكية.
ويُعتبر المكتب مصدراً رئيسياً للبيانات الشهرية حول سوق العمل والتضخم، والتي تُستخدم عالمياً من قبل الاقتصاديين والمستثمرين وصناع السياسات، وتؤثر هذه البيانات بشكل مباشر على أسواق الأسهم والسندات والعملات.
وكتب «أنتوني» العام الماضي مقالاً في صحيفة «نيويورك بوست»، انتقد فيه إدارة بايدن-هاريس، مشيراً إلى أن وزارة العمل تعيش في عالم من الخيال، بعد أن أصدر المكتب بيانات تُظهر تعديلاً كبيراً في تقديرات التوظيف للفترة من أبريل 2023 إلى مارس 2024.
وأثار ترشيح «أنتوني»، الذي ساهم في مشروع 2025، وهو خطة محافظة مثيرة للجدل لإصلاح الحكومة، قلقاً بين الاقتصاديين.
وأشار جو بروسويلاس، كبير الاقتصاديين في RSM US، إلى أن تعيين أنتوني قد يزيد الطلب على بيانات القطاع الخاص، فيما وصف أليكس جاكيز، رئيس قسم السياسات في Groundwork Collaborative، «أنتوني» بأنه منافق، معتبراً اختياره هجوماً واضحاً على التحليل المستقل قد يؤثر على مصداقية البيانات الاقتصادية الأمريكية.
ويحتاج «أنتوني» إلى موافقة مجلس الشيوخ لتولي المنصب، إذ سيتولى إدارة مكتب يواجه تحديات متزايدة تتعلق بجودة البيانات نتيجة انخفاض معدلات الاستجابة للاستبيانات ومشكلات جمع البيانات، خصوصاً فيما يتعلق بالتضخم.
وفي الأول من أغسطس، أقال ترمب المفوضة السابقة إريكا ماكنتارفير بعد تقرير أظهر نمواً أضعف من المتوقع في الوظائف لشهر يوليو، مع تعديلات كبيرة في بيانات التوظيف لمايو ويونيو، واتهمها ترمب بالتلاعب بالبيانات لأغراض سياسية دون تقديم أدلة، واعداً بتعيين شخص أكثر كفاءة وتأهيلاً.
ويحمل «أنتوني» درجة الدكتوراه في الاقتصاد، وعمل سابقاً كاقتصادي في مؤسسة تكساس للسياسات العامة، وقام بتدريس مواد مثل اقتصاديات العمل، النقود، والخدمات المصرفية، لكنه سيواجه تحديات معقدة في تحسين دقة بيانات المكتب، خصوصاً مع استمرار انخفاض معدلات الاستجابة للاستبيانات وتقليص التمويل.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the nomination of economist "E.J. Anthony" to take over as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), just 10 days after the dismissal of former commissioner Erika McEntarfer, accusing her - without evidence - of manipulating labor market data that showed weak performance, according to Reuters.
"E.J. Anthony," who currently serves as the chief economist at the Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank, is known for his sharp criticisms of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The bureau is considered a primary source of monthly data on the labor market and inflation, which is used globally by economists, investors, and policymakers, and this data directly impacts stock, bond, and currency markets.
Last year, "Anthony" wrote an article in the New York Post criticizing the Biden-Harris administration, pointing out that the Department of Labor lives in a fantasy world, after the bureau released data showing a significant adjustment in employment estimates for the period from April 2023 to March 2024.
The nomination of "Anthony," who contributed to Project 2025, a controversial conservative plan to reform government, has raised concerns among economists.
Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US, noted that Anthony's appointment could increase demand for private sector data, while Alex Jakubowski, head of the policy department at Groundwork Collaborative, described "Anthony" as a hypocrite, considering his selection a clear attack on independent analysis that could affect the credibility of U.S. economic data.
"Anthony" needs Senate approval to take the position, as he will manage a bureau facing increasing challenges related to data quality due to declining response rates to surveys and data collection issues, especially regarding inflation.
On August 1, Trump dismissed former commissioner Erika McEntarfer after a report showed weaker-than-expected job growth for July, with significant adjustments to employment data for May and June, accusing her of manipulating data for political purposes without providing evidence, promising to appoint someone more competent and qualified.
"Anthony" holds a Ph.D. in economics and previously worked as an economist at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, teaching subjects such as labor economics, money, and banking, but he will face complex challenges in improving the accuracy of the bureau's data, especially as response rates to surveys continue to decline and funding is reduced.
