Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich launched an attack on his government’s head, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israeli media reported Smotrich as saying: “I have lost confidence that the Prime Minister is capable and wants to reach a decision in Gaza; this is not the optimal way to achieve victory.”
He added: “We have paid a heavy price over 22 months of war, but we have achieved great accomplishments on all battlefields. Hezbollah, Syria, Iran, and other enemies have threatened us for years and planned a wide-ranging attack; they have been defeated.”
He stated, “In Gaza, we have eliminated most of the Hamas leaders and a significant part of its hostile infrastructure... but the work is not yet finished, and the war objectives have not been fully achieved.”
The minister, who heads the far-right “Religious Zionism” party, pointed out that in recent weeks, he had been working intensively with Netanyahu “on a dramatic step to achieve victory in Gaza,” describing it as “a step that will destroy its military and civilian capabilities and put unprecedented pressure on it to release the hostages.”
He clarified that for weeks, it seemed that Netanyahu supported the plan, saying he “discussed the details with me and expressed his desire to make a decision and his intention to move forward this time. But unfortunately, he backtracked on his position.”
Smotrich considered that “Netanyahu and the government have surrendered to their weakness and decided to repeat the same thing, embarking on a military step that is not aimed at making a decision but rather pressuring Hamas to push it towards a partial agreement for the release of the hostages, clearly emphasizing that if Hamas agrees to the deal, we will also agree to stop again, withdraw again, and allow it to recover and rearm... and so on.” He said, “This is not how decisions are made; this is not how the hostages will return; this is not how the war is won.”
The cabinet approved Netanyahu's plan last week for complete control over the city of Gaza.
