أعلن رئيس وزراء مالطا روبرت أبيلا، الثلاثاء، أن بلاده ستعترف بالدولة الفلسطينية خلال الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة في سبتمبر.
وأصدر أبيلا هذا الإعلان بعد ساعات من إعلان مماثل لرئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر، وبعد أيام من إعلان فرنسا خططها للاعتراف بالدولة الفلسطينية.
وقال أبيلا في منشور على «فيسبوك»: «موقفنا يعبّر عن التزامنا بالجهود الرامية إلى تحقيق سلام دائم في الشرق الأوسط».
وكانت حكومة مالطا تتعرض لضغوط متزايدة من داخل صفوفها للاعتراف بدولة فلسطينية، كما دعت المعارضة اليمينية في منتصف يوليو إلى الاعتراف الفوري.
ولهذه الجزيرة -العضو في الاتحاد الأوروبي- تاريخ طويل في دعم القضايا الفلسطينية، ودعمت جهود حل الدولتين.
وكشف أبيلا لأول مرة عن خطط الاعتراف بدولة فلسطينية في مايو، قائلاً إن ذلك سيتم في مؤتمر للأمم المتحدة في يونيو، ولكن تم تأجيل المؤتمر لاحقاً. وكانت أيرلندا والنرويج وإسبانيا قد اعترفت بفلسطين دولة مستقلة في مايو.
Malta's Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Tuesday that his country will recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September.
Abela made this announcement just hours after a similar declaration by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and days after France announced its plans to recognize the State of Palestine.
Abela said in a post on "Facebook": "Our position reflects our commitment to efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the Middle East."
The Maltese government has been under increasing pressure from within its ranks to recognize a Palestinian state, with the right-wing opposition calling for immediate recognition in mid-July.
This island nation, a member of the European Union, has a long history of supporting Palestinian causes and has backed efforts for a two-state solution.
Abela first revealed plans to recognize a Palestinian state in May, stating that this would occur at a United Nations conference in June, but the conference was later postponed. Ireland, Norway, and Spain recognized Palestine as an independent state in May.
