In a rare move, the office of former U.S. President Barack Obama issued an official statement responding to accusations from President Donald Trump, which it described as "ridiculous" and "misleading," after Trump accused Obama of committing "treason" and leading a "criminal conspiracy" to rig the 2016 and 2020 elections, without providing concrete evidence to support his claims. Obama's office considered these accusations a "weak attempt to distract" from other issues.
The accusations made by Trump came during remarks he made in the Oval Office while hosting Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., where he relied on a controversial report issued by National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard, which claimed that recently released documents reveal a "treasonous conspiracy" by officials in the Obama administration to undermine Trump's victory in the 2016 election. These claims were strongly rejected by Obama's office, which affirmed that they are inconsistent with previous conclusions confirmed by the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2020, led by Marco Rubio, which indicated Russian interference in the elections without direct manipulation of votes.
When reporters asked Trump (on Tuesday) about Jeffrey Epstein, a previously convicted sex offender, he shifted to what he described as "Obama's criminality," saying, "After what they did to me - whether it's true or false - it's time to go after people, and to arrest Obama directly. What they did in 2016 and 2020 is extremely criminal; it's criminal at the highest level, so these are the things that really need to be talked about."
Patrick Rodenbush, a spokesperson for Obama, stated: "Out of respect for the presidency, our office does not usually honor the nonsense and misinformation that continuously flows from the White House with a response, but these allegations are heinous enough to deserve a reply. These bizarre claims are ridiculous and a feeble attempt to divert attention."
The Obama spokesperson added that the Trump administration is misleading about the information it uses to promote its claims, stating: "Nothing in the document released last week undermines the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election, but it did not succeed in manipulating any of the votes, and these findings were confirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired by Marco Rubio at the time."
These accusations come amid ongoing tension between Trump and Obama, as Trump has previously promoted conspiracy theories against his predecessor, including accusing him in 2011 of not being born in the United States, which prompted Obama to release his birth certificate. Since returning to the presidency in January 2025, Trump has intensified his attacks on his political opponents, relying on reports like those issued by Gabbard, which claimed that the Obama administration manipulated intelligence reports to tarnish his 2016 victory.
These reports have sparked widespread controversy, with Democrats such as Representative Jim Himes calling them "baseless," noting that they contradict previous investigations, including the 2019 report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the Senate Committee.
Obama's office statement indicated that his administration never asserted that Russian interference affected the election results, but rather focused on the dissemination of leaked documents and online disinformation, conclusions that were supported by subsequent investigations. Trump also recently stirred controversy by re-sharing a fake AI-generated video showing Obama's arrest in the Oval Office, which heightened the criticism directed at him.
