في مشهد حبس الأنفاس ووصفته بأنه «أشبه بما يحدث في الأفلام»، أجلت قوات الأمن رئيسة كوستاريكا لورا فرنانديس على عجل إثر دوي انفجار غامض هزّ المنطقة بالقرب من موقع للتعدين غير القانوني، وذلك أثناء جولة ميدانية مجدولة كانت تقوم بها برفقة عدد من المشرّعين في مناجم ذهب غير مرخصة. وأظهرت لقطات فيديو درامية تم بثها عبر شاشات التلفزيون لحظة سقوط فرنانديز على الأرض بعيد الانفجار مباشرة، في حين سارع حراسها الشخصيون المسلحون إلى إحاطتها وحمايتها بأجسادهم، قبل نقلها سريعاً إلى سيارة أمنية غادرت المكان.
ورغم خطورة الموقف، خرجت الرئيسة البالغة من العمر 39 عاماً لاحقاً لتؤكد للصحفيين أنها لم تصب بأي أذى، لتعيد هذه الحادثة إلى الأذهان التحذيرات الرسمية الصادرة عن حكومة الدولة الواقعة في أمريكا الوسطى في الثالث من يونيو الجاري، التي كشفت فيها تلقي معلومات استخباراتية تفيد بوجود مؤامرة لاغتيال الرئيسة تم التخطيط لها من داخل أحد السجون.
يأتي هذا التطور الأمني الخطير بعد أن تولت فرنانديز مقاليد الحكم في مايو الماضي خلفاً لمرشدها السياسي رودريغو تشافيز، إثر فوزها الساحق في انتخابات الأول من فبراير، مستندة إلى وعد صارم بمكافحة الجريمة وتعزيز الأمن في بلاد طالما عُدّت من بين الأكثر أماناً في الأمريكتين. وجدير بالذكر أن سلفها تشافيز كان قد أعلن هو الآخر مطلع العام استهدافه بمخطط اغتيال، دون أن تقدم الحكومة دليلاً قاطعاً على ذلك؛ في وقت تكثف فيه كوستاريكا وجارتها نيكاراغوا جهودهما المشتركة منذ مارس الماضي للقضاء نهائياً على أنشطة التعدين غير القانوني على طول حدودهما المشتركة.
In a breathtaking scene that she described as "similar to what happens in movies," Costa Rican security forces hurriedly evacuated President Laura Fernández following the sound of a mysterious explosion that shook the area near an illegal mining site, during a scheduled field tour she was conducting with several lawmakers at unlicensed gold mines. Dramatic video footage broadcast on television showed Fernández falling to the ground immediately after the explosion, while her armed personal guards rushed to surround her and protect her with their bodies, before quickly transporting her to a security vehicle that left the scene.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the 39-year-old president later emerged to assure reporters that she was unharmed, bringing to mind the official warnings issued by the government of the Central American nation on June 3, which revealed that they had received intelligence information indicating a conspiracy to assassinate the president planned from within a prison.
This serious security development comes after Fernández took office in May, succeeding her political mentor Rodrigo Chávez, following her landslide victory in the February 1 elections, based on a strict promise to combat crime and enhance security in a country that has long been considered one of the safest in the Americas. It is worth noting that her predecessor Chávez had also announced at the beginning of the year that he was targeted by an assassination plot, without the government providing conclusive evidence of this; at a time when Costa Rica and its neighbor Nicaragua have intensified their joint efforts since March to completely eliminate illegal mining activities along their shared borders.
