توقعت وكالات الاستخبارات الأمريكية أن يتخذ رئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو خطوات من شأنها تقويض جهود واشنطن للتوصل إلى اتفاق سلام دائم مع إيران، في ظل تعرضه لضغوط سياسية داخلية شديدة لمواصلة الحرب في لبنان.
ضغوط سياسية داخلية
ووفقاً للتقييمات، كشف مسؤولون أمريكيون حاليون وسابقون، أن إسرائيل تبدو عازمة على مواصلة عملياتها العسكرية ضد حزب الله في لبنان، ما يتعارض مع بند أساسي في مذكرة التفاهم التي وقعها الرئيسان الأمريكي دونالد ترمب ونظيره الإيراني مسعود بزشكيان، نص على إنهاء الأعمال العدائية على كافة الجبهات بما فيها لبنان.
وأفاد التقرير الاستخباراتي بأن بقاء نتنياهو السياسي في ظل اقتراب الانتخابات هذا الخريف، مرتبط بإظهاره لجمهوره الداخلي أنه لن يسحب القوات الإسرائيلية من الجنوب اللبناني، وأنه سيمضي في تصعيد القتال ضد حزب الله، وفق ما نقلت صحيفة «واشنطن بوست» عن أحد المسؤولين المطلعين.
إسرائيل محبطة من الاتفاق
ووصف التقرير شعور إسرائيل بالإحباط من بنود مذكرة التفاهم، والتي اعتبرتها أنها تقوّض هدفها الأوسع المتمثل في الحفاظ على أقصى درجات الضغط على طهران، بحسب مسؤولين حاليين وسابقين. وأشار التقرير إلى انطباع إسرائيل بأن الاتفاق قد يقيّد قدرتها على الدفاع عن نفسها في مواجهة حزب الله.
وأكد مسؤولون في إدارة ترمب أن بنود المذكرة لا تمنع إسرائيل من الرد على حزب الله إذا تعرّضت لهجوم، وأن مخاوف نتنياهو تبقى أقل أهمية مقارنة بالحاجة إلى إتمام الاتفاق وإعادة فتح مضيق هرمز لتفادي أزمة اقتصادية عالمية. ووفق التقرير فإن أي تعليق للأعمال القتالية أو انسحاب الجيش من لبنان سيُنظر إليه داخل إسرائيل على أنه هزيمة لنتنياهو.
من جانبه، اعتبر مسؤول حكومي إسرائيلي أن النشاط العسكري الإسرائيلي في لبنان يهدف حصريًا إلى الدفاع عن المواطنين الإسرائيليين من الهجمات المتواصلة لحزب الله.
تصعيد القتال ضد حزب الله
وعلى الصعيد الداخلي، لا يزال الرأي العام في إسرائيل يدعم الجهود الرامية إلى تفكيك حزب الله، وطالب عشرات الآلاف من الإسرائيليين الذين نزحوا من منازلهم من المستوطنات الشمالية على الحدود مع لبنان بسبب هجمات الطائرات المسيّرة والصواريخ بأن يقوم نتنياهو بتدمير حزب الله، في وقت يتعرض فيه لانتقادات حادة من مختلف أطياف المشهد السياسي الداخلي بسبب عدم القضاء على هذا التهديد.
وأظهر استطلاع للرأي في مايو أن نحو 70% من الإسرائيليين اليهود يؤيدون تصعيد القتال ضد حزب الله. بينما رأى محللون سياسيون أن أي انسحاب عسكري من الجنوب اللبناني سيُفسَّر من قبل الناخبين على أنه علامة على الهزيمة.
U.S. intelligence agencies have predicted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will take steps that could undermine Washington's efforts to reach a lasting peace agreement with Iran, amid intense domestic political pressure to continue the war in Lebanon.
Domestic Political Pressure
According to assessments, current and former U.S. officials revealed that Israel appears determined to continue its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, which contradicts a key provision in the memorandum of understanding signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Bezhakian, which called for the cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon.
The intelligence report indicated that Netanyahu's political survival, as elections approach this fall, is tied to demonstrating to his domestic audience that he will not withdraw Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and that he will escalate the fighting against Hezbollah, according to a source cited by the Washington Post.
Israel Frustrated by the Agreement
The report described Israel's frustration with the terms of the memorandum of understanding, which it views as undermining its broader goal of maintaining maximum pressure on Tehran, according to current and former officials. The report noted Israel's impression that the agreement may restrict its ability to defend itself against Hezbollah.
Trump administration officials confirmed that the terms of the memorandum do not prevent Israel from responding to Hezbollah if it is attacked, and that Netanyahu's concerns remain less significant compared to the need to finalize the agreement and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to avoid a global economic crisis. According to the report, any suspension of combat operations or withdrawal of the military from Lebanon would be perceived within Israel as a defeat for Netanyahu.
For his part, an Israeli government official considered that Israeli military activity in Lebanon is exclusively aimed at defending Israeli citizens from Hezbollah's ongoing attacks.
Escalation of Fighting Against Hezbollah
Domestically, public opinion in Israel continues to support efforts to dismantle Hezbollah, with tens of thousands of Israelis displaced from their homes in northern settlements along the border with Lebanon due to drone and missile attacks demanding that Netanyahu destroy Hezbollah, while facing sharp criticism from various segments of the domestic political scene for not eliminating this threat.
A May opinion poll showed that about 70% of Jewish Israelis support escalating the fighting against Hezbollah. Meanwhile, political analysts believe that any military withdrawal from southern Lebanon would be interpreted by voters as a sign of defeat.
