The American President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of reaching a ceasefire in Gaza within a week. He told reporters during an event at the White House yesterday (Friday), celebrating the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, that he believes a ceasefire in Gaza is imminent. He added that he had just been speaking with some parties involved in trying to reach a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Israeli media reports indicated that President Trump and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio held phone discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, during which understandings were reached to end the war in the Gaza Strip within two weeks.
The newspaper "Israel Hayom" revealed that the agreement includes the release of hostages held by Hamas, the transfer of remaining Hamas leaders to other countries, as part of a larger settlement aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region, and Israel's readiness to consider a future solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution, provided that reforms are made within the Palestinian Authority.
In return, the United States will recognize the application of some Israeli sovereignty over areas in the occupied West Bank, as part of broader understandings that include expanding the Abraham Accords to include additional countries, which may include Syria.
In another context, the American president announced that he will work on "resolving the conflict with North Korea."
In response to a question about whether he had written a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as reported in this month's news, Trump did not directly answer the question but told reporters, "I have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un, and I completely agree with him. So we will see what happens."
He added, "Someone says there is a potential conflict, and I believe we will work to resolve it. If there is a conflict, it will not be related to us."
The online site "NK News," based in Seoul, reported that the North Korean delegation at the United Nations in New York repeatedly refused to accept a letter from Trump to Kim.
Trump and Kim held three meetings during Trump's first term and exchanged several letters that the American president described as "beautiful," before the unprecedented diplomatic approach collapsed due to the United States' demands for Kim to abandon nuclear weapons.
In his second term, Trump acknowledged that North Korea is a "nuclear power." The White House stated on June 11 that Trump would welcome communication again with Kim, without confirming the sending of any letter.
However, North Korea has shown no interest in returning to negotiations and has significantly sought to enhance its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, strengthening its ties with Russia through direct support for Moscow's war in Ukraine.
