The mother did not know, as she was putting her small child Elias (5 years old) onto the kindergarten bus in the morning, that she was saying her final goodbye. The scene that began with the hope of a new school day turned within hours into a tragedy that shook the Arab street, after the small child was found lifeless inside the closed bus in the Zarqa Governorate of Jordan.
As the time for return approached, Elias's family grew anxious after he did not get off the bus, prompting the mother to immediately contact the bus driver. Just a few minutes were enough for everything to change:
- The shocking discovery: The driver returned to check the vehicle, only to find the child lying on the seat motionless, after being locked inside for hours during the school day.
- Fatal heat shock: Medical examinations upon his arrival at the hospital confirmed that his death was due to severe heat shock, after being trapped for nearly four hours in a suffocating environment that had turned into what resembled an oven under the sun's rays.
- The father's bitterness: Elias's father considered what happened to be "a blatant disregard for lives," denouncing the passing of long hours without anyone noticing the absence of a child in the prime of his youth, and affirming his complete resort to the Jordanian judiciary to seek justice for his son.
For its part, the Jordanian security forces quickly detained the bus driver (who was contracted by the parents) and began detailed investigations with her, while transferring the child's body to forensic medicine to finalize the report in preparation for referring the entire case to the court.
This painful tragedy raises sharp questions about safety and oversight levels in children's transport buses, amid a wave of widespread anger demanding stricter penalties to prevent the recurrence of such fatal negligence scenarios.
