فجّر انتحاري نفسه مساء اليوم (الأحد) داخل كنيسة مار إلياس الواقعة في حي الدويلعة جنوب شرقي العاصمة السورية دمشق، ما أسفر عن سقوط أكثر من 15 قتيلًا وعدد كبير من الجرحى. وأظهرت مشاهد بثها التلفزيون السوري حجم الدمار الكبير الذي خلفه الانفجار، حيث تناثرت المقاعد وتلطخت الجدران والأرضيات بالدماء.
وعلى الفور، هرعت سيارات الإسعاف والدفاع المدني إلى الموقع، وتم نقل المصابين إلى عدد من مستشفيات العاصمة، فيما فرضت قوى الأمن السورية طوقًا أمنيًا حول الكنيسة وبدأت عمليات التمشيط والتفتيش في محيط المنطقة.
وفي أول رد فعل حكومي، أدان وزير الإعلام السوري الهجوم بشدة، وصرح قائلاً: «ندين بشدة التفجير الإرهابي الذي استهدف كنيسة في الدويلعة بدمشق. ونؤكد تعهد الدولة ببذل جميع الجهود لمحاربة التنظيمات الإجرامية التي تحاول استهداف أمن واستقرار الوطن».
ولم تعلن أي جهة مسؤوليتها عن التفجير حتى اللحظة.
A suicide bomber detonated himself this evening (Sunday) inside St. Elias Church located in the Douala neighborhood southeast of the Syrian capital, Damascus, resulting in more than 15 fatalities and a large number of injuries. Footage broadcast by Syrian television showed the extensive destruction caused by the explosion, with chairs scattered and walls and floors stained with blood.
Immediately, ambulances and civil defense vehicles rushed to the site, and the injured were transported to several hospitals in the capital, while Syrian security forces imposed a security cordon around the church and began search and inspection operations in the surrounding area.
In the first government reaction, the Syrian Minister of Information strongly condemned the attack, stating: "We strongly condemn the terrorist explosion that targeted a church in Douala, Damascus. We affirm the state's commitment to exert all efforts to combat the criminal organizations that seek to undermine the security and stability of the homeland."
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion so far.
