أُجبر السيناتور الديمقراطي عن ولاية كاليفورنيا والمنتقد اللاذع لسياسات الهجرة أليكس باديلا، على الخروج بالقوة من مؤتمر صحفي عقدته وزيرة الأمن الداخلي كريستي نويم، في لوس أنجلوس اليوم (الخميس).
وكانت الوزيرة، كريستي نويم، تتحدث عن جهود إنفاذ قوانين الهجرة الفيدرالية في المدينة عندما رفع السيناتور باديلا صوته ليقول إن لديه أسئلة، مما استدعى إخراجه وهو يُعرّف عن نفسه، وتم طرحه بالقوة أرضاً وتقييد يديه.
وفي مقطع فيديو للحادثة، انتشر على نطاق واسع على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، ظهر باديلا وهو مُقيّد ويُخرج من الغرفة من قبل رجال الأمن.
وتم سماع باديلا وهو يقول: «أنا السيناتور أليكس باديلا. لديّ أسئلة للوزيرة»، بينما يحاول التخلص من رجال الأمن الذين يُخرجونه من المبنى، وهو يردد: «ابتعدوا عني!».
وفي بيان صادر عن مكتب باديلا، قال فريقه: «يتواجد السيناتور باديلا حالياً في لوس أنجلوس لممارسة واجبه في الإشراف على عمليات الحكومة الفيدرالية في لوس أنجلوس وجميع أنحاء كاليفورنيا. وكان في المبنى الفيدرالي يستمع إلى المؤتمر الصحفي للوزيرة نويم».
وأضاف: «حاول السيناتور باديلا طرح سؤال على الوزيرة، فأخرجه عملاء فيدراليون بالقوة، وأجبروه على الانبطاح على الأرض وقيدوا يديه. ثم أخلي سبيله بعد ذلك».
من جانبها، أوضحت وزيرة الأمن الداخلي كريستي نويم، بأنها تحدثت مع السيناتور باديلا بعد المؤتمر الصحفي، مضيفةً أن محاولته للتدخل «لم تكن مناسبة». واحتج الديمقراطيون الغاضبون على معاملة السيناتور باديلا، ودعوا الجمهوريين للانضمام إليهم.
Democratic Senator from California and vocal critic of immigration policies Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles today (Thursday).
Secretary Noem was discussing efforts to enforce federal immigration laws in the city when Senator Padilla raised his voice to say he had questions, prompting his removal while he was introducing himself, and he was thrown to the ground and had his hands restrained.
In a widely circulated video of the incident on social media, Padilla was seen being restrained and escorted out of the room by security personnel.
Padilla was heard saying, "I am Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the Secretary," as he tried to shake off the security personnel who were removing him from the building, repeatedly saying, "Get away from me!".
In a statement from Padilla's office, his team said, "Senator Padilla is currently in Los Angeles to fulfill his duty of overseeing federal government operations in Los Angeles and throughout California. He was in the federal building listening to Secretary Noem's press conference."
They added, "Senator Padilla attempted to ask a question of the Secretary, and he was forcibly removed by federal agents, who made him lie on the ground and restrained his hands. He was later released."
For her part, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that she spoke with Senator Padilla after the press conference, adding that his attempt to intervene "was not appropriate." Angry Democrats protested the treatment of Senator Padilla and called on Republicans to join them.
