The chaos has returned and battles have reignited between armed militias in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, since this morning (Monday) after weeks of declaring a ceasefire.

Clashes intensified between the Deterrence Forces on one side and the General Security Forces affiliated with the Ministry of Interior on the other in various areas of the capital, Tripoli, after the Deterrence Forces announced the recovery of some of their previous positions, while the conflict resolution and ceasefire maintenance forces withdrew from their locations.

Eyewitnesses and local residents confirmed that gunfire could be heard around Al-Tabeeb Road and the Fernaj Island, coinciding with the deployment of armored vehicles and military equipment in the streets of the capital and the closure of some roads.

The clashes led to a fire breaking out in the Sidi Minidr cemetery, according to videos shared by activists on social media, amid calls from citizens for the relevant authorities to quickly send fire trucks to control the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby areas.

Observers warned of the possibility that the new clashes could lead to a wider escalation between the armed militias affiliated with the Government of National Unity and other opposing armed groups within Tripoli, which has been experiencing security tensions for weeks following the assassination of the head of the Stability Support Agency, Abdelghani al-Kikli.

The bloody confrontations highlight the difficulty of maintaining security in the capital despite efforts and promises to end armed manifestations and curb the security chaos in order to establish state control.

Last week, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, and the President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, announced their agreement to evacuate Tripoli of armed manifestations following chaos, security tensions, and military mobilizations over the past weeks, in response to popular calls demanding the end of the presence of militias in the streets and squares and the necessity to limit their influence.
