وجهت إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب السفارات بالتوقف عن جدولة مواعيد تأشيرات الطلاب، استعداداً لتوسيع نطاق التدقيق على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي للمتقدمين.
وفي نسخة من مذكرة أُرسلت إلى البعثات الدبلوماسية، قال وزير الخارجية ماركو روبيو إن هذا التوقف سيستمر «حتى صدور توجيهات إضافية».
وأفادت الرسالة بأنه سيتم تشديد التدقيق على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي لتأشيرات الطلاب وتأشيرات التبادل الأجنبي، ما سيكون له «تداعيات كبيرة» على السفارات والقنصليات.
واتخذت الإدارة في الأشهر الأخيرة خطوات لإلغاء عدد من التأشيرات للطلاب الناشطين. وشددت مذكرة وزارة الخارجية، على السفارات الأمريكية يوم الثلاثاء بحذف أي مواعيد شاغرة من جداولها للطلاب الذين يسعون للحصول على تأشيرات، لكنها قالت إن بإمكان الطلاب الذين لديهم مواعيد مجدولة مسبقاً المضي قدماً. وذكرت الرسالة أيضاً أن وزارة الخارجية تستعد لتوسيع نطاق فحص وتدقيق حسابات وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي الإلزامي، الذي يُطبق على جميع طلبات تأشيرات الطلاب.
يذكر أنه عادة ما يُطلب من الطلاب الأجانب الراغبين في الدراسة في الولايات المتحدة تحديد مواعيد مقابلات في سفارة أمريكية في بلدانهم الأصلية قبل الموافقة.
وعندما سُئلت عن تأشيرات الطلاب، قالت المتحدثة باسم وزارة الخارجية، تامي بروس، للصحفيين الثلاثاء: «نحن نأخذ عملية التحقق من هوية القادمين إلى البلاد على محمل الجد، وسنواصل القيام بذلك».
وجمّدت إدارة ترمب مئات الملايين من الدولارات من تمويل الجامعات، وتحركت لترحيل العديد من الطلاب، بينما ألغت آلاف التأشيرات لآخرين. وأوقفت المحاكم العديد من هذه الإجراءات.
كانت جامعة «هارفارد» محور غضب الرئيس دونالد ترمب. كما يتهمها بانتهاك حكم للمحكمة العليا باتباع سياسات قبول تمييزية.
وفي الأسبوع الماضي، ألغت إدارة ترمب قدرة «هارفارد» على تسجيل الطلاب الدوليين أو استضافة الباحثين الأجانب. وقد أوقف قاضٍ فيدرالي هذه السياسة.

In a copy of a memo sent to diplomatic missions, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that this halt would continue "until further notice."
The message indicated that there would be increased scrutiny of social media for student visas and foreign exchange visas, which would have "significant implications" for embassies and consulates.
The administration has taken steps in recent months to revoke a number of visas for active students. The State Department memo emphasized to U.S. embassies on Tuesday to delete any open appointments from their schedules for students seeking visas, but it stated that students with previously scheduled appointments could proceed. The message also noted that the State Department is preparing to expand the mandatory examination and scrutiny of social media accounts, which is applied to all student visa applications.
It is worth mentioning that foreign students wishing to study in the United States are typically required to schedule interviews at a U.S. embassy in their home countries before approval.
When asked about student visas, State Department spokesperson Tami Bruce told reporters on Tuesday, "We take the process of verifying the identity of those coming into the country seriously, and we will continue to do so."
The Trump administration froze hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for universities and moved to deport many students, while revoking thousands of visas for others. Courts have halted many of these actions.
Harvard University has been the focus of President Donald Trump's anger. He also accuses it of violating a Supreme Court ruling by following discriminatory admission policies.
Last week, the Trump administration revoked Harvard's ability to enroll international students or host foreign researchers. A federal judge has blocked this policy.
