The Syrian Ministry of Interior was able to arrest members of a cell affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS that was planning to destabilize security and stability by carrying out a qualitative security operation near the capital, Damascus, today (Monday).

The head of internal security in the Damascus countryside, Major General Hussam Al-Tahan, announced in a statement that based on accurate information about the presence of terrorist cells affiliated with ISIS operating in several areas of the Western Ghouta, we carried out a precise and meticulous security operation yesterday (Sunday), which resulted in the arrest of several members of those cells.

He stated that they were found in possession of quantities of light, medium, and heavy weapons, as well as suicide vests, which they were planning to use to undermine security and stability in the area.

Since the overthrow of the regime of former President Bashar Al-Assad on December 8 of last year, the pace of attacks carried out by the terrorist organization in areas under the control of the new authority has decreased.

It is worth mentioning that this is the second security operation carried out by the Syrian authorities this month, as a security personnel and three members of the organization were killed in a similar operation in the city of Aleppo on May 17.

After ISIS took control of vast areas in Syria and Iraq in 2014, it faced painful blows, culminating in its defeat in Syria in 2019. However, its elements, who retreated to the desert, continue to carry out attacks, particularly against Kurdish forces in the northeast of the country.

The terrorist organization lost its last stronghold in the vicinity of the capital, Damascus, in the Al-Hajar Al-Aswad area in June 2018. The international coalition led by the United States has succeeded over the past years in targeting many of its leaders and members with airstrikes.
