European countries are moving towards lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria next week, and Western diplomatic sources have revealed that the legal decisions to lift the European economic sanctions on Damascus will be issued on Tuesday or Wednesday of the coming week.

Sources indicated that a new sanctions mechanism related to human rights violations will be established, in light of the events that occurred on the Syrian coast in early March.

The sources mentioned that the results of the ongoing investigations into the coastal events and the executive steps that the Syrian government will take will be put to the test. They spoke of the possibility of activating this mechanism against Syrian officials if the perpetrators of the violations are not held accountable, according to the sources.

Last Tuesday, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the Union's foreign ministers agreed to lift the economic sanctions imposed on the country since the era of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The U.S. State Department announced that it is working intensively to lift the sanctions on Syria as soon as possible, confirming that the process will move quickly.

State Department spokesperson Tami Bruce mentioned last Thursday evening that lifting sanctions on a country takes a certain amount of time even when instructions come from the president, and that both the State and Treasury Departments are working intensively in this regard.

She stated that President Donald Trump has taken a clear stance regarding lifting the sanctions on Damascus, and that the time has come for that. She added that a team has begun working on this issue, and that the process will move quickly.
