China and the United States have agreed on a mutual arrangement to reduce tariffs worth $30 billion, along with launching a dialogue on artificial intelligence, as part of an eight-point consensus reached by the two countries during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that both sides praised the efforts of their economic teams and agreed on a series of steps, including the formation of a trade council, the implementation of the tariff reduction arrangement, and the extension of the results of previous talks held in Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier, Beijing and Washington had agreed to extend the trade truce for two months, set to end on November 10, while U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pisent stated that the agreement gives both countries more time to work on a more comprehensive trade deal.
The leaders of the world's two largest economies concluded a three-day summit focused on enhancing direct communications between them, while the official Chinese news agency "Xinhua" reported that Xi returned to Beijing.
Regarding artificial intelligence, the ministry clarified that the two countries agreed to launch a dialogue to discuss the risks and benefits of the technology, with the next round of talks scheduled for November, along with establishing a communication channel to address incidents related to artificial intelligence.
Both sides also agreed to exchange support in hosting meetings of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in China and the G20 summit in the United States, with both leaders affirming their intention to participate in events hosted by the other country.
On international issues, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that Xi and the U.S. President agreed on the necessity for Iran to adhere to its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, and they also agreed that no country or entity should impose tariffs on the passage through international waterways.
During the summit, both sides recalled the memories of the alliance that brought China and the United States together during World War II, in reference to the historical ties between the two countries.
