The price of Brent crude surpassed $100 per barrel for the first time since July, supported by exchanges of attacks between the United States and Iran and increased oil purchases by China, driving the global benchmark crude higher. The price of the global benchmark crude rose by as much as 2.3% in London today, following the announcement from the U.S. Central Command that the U.S. military destroyed five Iranian tankers loaded with oil in response to attempts to target a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles at night.
Risk Premium
Brent crude prices have jumped by about 25% since early August, amid dwindling hopes for a lasting resolution to the conflict and escalating ground confrontations, surpassing the $100 per barrel mark during the session for the first time since July 24, according to the Financial Times. Analysts at ING Bank stated in a note: "Recent developments reinforce the view that we are still far from resuming peace talks, and therefore it is likely that the market will continue to price in a significant risk premium." Markets are awaiting the release of the U.S. crude inventory report from the Petroleum Institute later, which has been delayed from its usual schedule due to the holiday on Monday for Labor Day.
