The prices of gold in the Sudanese markets have surged, driven by the continuous decline of the Sudanese pound against foreign currencies, alongside the increase seen in the prices of the precious metal in global markets. The price of raw gold per gram in the Sudanese market reached about 850,000 pounds, while the price of crafted gold per gram ranged between 950,000 and 980,000 pounds, at a time when local prices continue to record high levels.
Exchange Rate Decline
The Sudanese pound recorded a new decline against foreign currencies after the dollar in the parallel market surpassed the 7,000-pound mark for the first time, while the dollar price in Sudanese banks ranged between 3,022 pounds and 4,367 pounds, according to the Sudanese website "Al-Mashhad."
Mohammed Salih, the Secretary-General of the Gold Exporters Association, stated: "The continuous rise in foreign currency prices against the Sudanese pound is the main factor behind the rise of gold locally, coinciding with the increase recorded in global prices." He explained that the Sudanese gold market is directly affected by exchange rate movements, as the impacts of rising foreign currencies quickly transfer to the prices of the precious metal within local markets.
Increasing Pressures
The rise in gold prices in Sudan comes at a time when the local currency is experiencing increasing pressures, making the precious metal one of the assets that are quickly affected by exchange rate fluctuations and the decline in the value of the pound.
The price of gold continued to gain today, supported by the decline of the dollar and U.S. Treasury bond yields, while investors are awaiting key employment data that could determine expectations about whether the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates this month. Globally, gold rose in spot transactions by 1.2% to $4,437.08 per ounce, and U.S. gold futures increased by 1.6% to $4,483.30.
