Oil prices continued their sharp decline during today's trading, amid cautious hopes for a resolution to the conflict between the United States and Iran, as traders continue to assess developments in the Middle East. Brent crude fell during today's trading to $83.68.
U.S. President Donald Trump, who unexpectedly halted the bombing campaign against Iran over the past weekend, stated: "There are good talks going on with Tehran, but he threatened to resume attacks if the negotiations do not yield results."
Improvement in the Situation
Market analyst Giovanni Staunovo reported: "The movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz remains low, but the market hopes for an improvement in the situation with new talks between Oman and Iran regarding a mechanism to manage navigation through the strait."
Oil prices had dropped yesterday by more than 7%, reaching their lowest level since July 21, after the United States and Iran halted the exchange of attacks that had lasted for two weeks. This has bolstered hopes for a diplomatic solution that could ease tensions and allow navigation to resume through the Strait of Hormuz.
De-escalation of Tensions
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Pompeo stated in remarks to Fox News Sunday and other U.S. media recently: "President Donald Trump decided to temporarily halt the attacks to allow more time for diplomacy."
Analysts at ING noted in a client memo: "Oil prices dropped significantly in early trading amid the easing of military movements between the United States and Iran, providing the first tangible signs of a potential de-escalation of tensions."
They added: "The movement of oil prices this morning clearly reflects the market's strong need for positive news." Despite the halt in attacks, shipping data showed that fewer than 10 ships carrying commodities crossed the Strait of Hormuz daily at the beginning of this week.
