The Syrian Minister of Energy, Mohammad Al-Bashir, confirmed that the government is working on restructuring the energy sector in Syria and launching holding companies to enhance production and develop infrastructure.
The minister explained that the establishment of holding companies in the fields of oil and electricity is currently being studied, and they will be launched gradually to take over the tasks of exploration, production, transportation, refining, generation, and distribution, similar to major global oil companies. Additionally, the establishment of a company to manage the mining and phosphate sector in Syria is being considered.
In an interview with Syrian News, the Syrian minister added that the first company will oversee oil and gas operations in the country, from exploration to transportation, refining, and distribution, while several companies will operate under the electricity sector company in the fields of generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.
Al-Bashir continued that the company designated for electricity distribution will issue tenders for companies and the private sector in Syria.
Without specifying a timeline for launching these companies, the minister pointed out that committees have been established to study their structures, adding that they will present results within days, affirming: "The matter requires time, as these companies need to assess their assets and capital, and how to transition gradually to this structure."
Al-Bashir also indicated that the country is considering launching a company concerned with the mining and phosphate sector as part of the steps to restructure the energy sector.
Regarding the ministry's work, Al-Bashir noted that it will focus on setting policies and laws, as well as supervision and follow-up, while the executive tasks will be handled by the companies that will be established.
