The head of the Giza Chamber of Commerce in Egypt, Osama Al-Shahed, revealed that the upcoming period will witness a decline in the prices of basic commodities in the markets by rates ranging between 10-15%, following an agreement between the Egyptian government and traders and manufacturers on an initiative to reduce the prices of various goods yesterday.
Al-Shahed stated that the first five months of the current year have seen a decrease in the prices of several basic commodities such as sugar and rice by rates ranging between 5% and 13%, while the prices of some other goods remained stable despite changes in cost elements following the increase in fuel prices last April.
He pointed out that the Prime Minister spoke with some steel manufacturers who attended the meeting yesterday about the significant rise in steel prices during the current period, and it was noted that a reduction in steel prices in Egypt is expected by more than 2000 pounds per ton, dropping from 38,400 pounds to 36,000 pounds. The discussion also touched on the rise in cement prices, which have currently reached 4,000 pounds per ton due to increased exports, and there was an agreement to address this issue in a way that reflects on the stability of its prices in the market.
He mentioned that the upcoming period will see meetings held with all manufacturers and traders to discuss reducing the prices of all goods, so that citizens can feel an improvement in their living conditions.
He added that the manufacturers and traders who attended the meeting with the Prime Minister also called for continued support for the industrial sector and for accelerating the implementation of various initiatives that will help factories increase production and exports, which will lead to further declines or stability of the dollar at the current level, which is close to 49 pounds.
For his part, the head of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce, Ahmed El-Wakeel, stated that the federation will hold meetings with all representatives of the commercial sectors starting next week to discuss the expected reduction rates on the prices of all goods.
El-Wakeel added to "Al-Arabiya Business": The Federation of Chambers of Commerce will prepare a file with the proposed reduction rates to be applied to various goods and will present it to the Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly soon.
El-Wakeel anticipated that the rates of price reductions would vary from one commodity to another depending on the degree of impact of the dollar's decline on them, and he indicated that the initiative requires some time for citizens to feel its impact on prices.
For his part, the head of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, Ayman Al-Ashry, stated that he has called all the sectors affiliated with the chamber to an emergency meeting today to determine the possible rates for the decline in commodity prices across all sectors in the upcoming period, and these will be announced as soon as the meeting concludes.
He clarified that the chamber's direction to reduce commodity prices comes in response to the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, which were conveyed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to traders and manufacturers during yesterday's meeting, emphasizing the importance of reducing prices by rates that satisfy citizens.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting yesterday with some traders and manufacturers to discuss reducing the prices of various goods in the Egyptian market.
During the meeting, Madbouly told traders and manufacturers that what is currently required is for citizens to feel a decrease in commodity prices, especially since the dollar has been recording a decline recently against the pound.
