The Egyptian actress Mona Zaki has settled the controversy surrounding the character (Nora) that she portrays in the series (Tali' Nasel), confirming that the work does not promote revenge or justify harming others, despite the widespread criticism directed at some of the heroine's actions throughout the events.
The actress's statements came after a wave of discussions on social media, which argued that the series presents vengeful behaviors in a way that could be interpreted as justified in the face of marital infidelity.
The plot revolves around a wife who discovers her husband secretly married to another woman after years of trust and stability, which leads her into a state of shock and betrayal, before she embarks on a path of revenge that sparked widespread debate among viewers.
The events included the character resorting to practices that critics deemed unethical; among them, spying on the husband's mobile phone, manipulating his psychological state, and using other means for revenge, which opened the door for discussion about the messages conveyed by the dramatic work. Mona Zaki also faced accusations that she contributes through her character to reinforcing the idea that harming the other party may be a legitimate reaction to infidelity, which the actress firmly rejected.
In this context, the Egyptian MP Amira Saber stated that experiencing infidelity does not give anyone a justification to violate the law or harm others, noting that some actions depicted in the series could legally fall under crimes punishable by law.
Mona Zaki emphasized that what is presented on screen falls within the requirements of dramatic plot, and does not necessarily reflect the stance of the work or its creators regarding those behaviors. She clarified that having a character make wrong or irresponsible decisions does not mean that the series encourages viewers to imitate her, asserting that drama presents diverse characters and behaviors for the purpose of storytelling, not to justify their actions. She added that understanding Nora's motivations and her experience of psychological shock and feelings of betrayal does not mean agreeing with everything she did during the events, stressing that empathy for the character is different from adopting her behaviors or considering her a role model.
She concluded her remarks by affirming that she personally does not believe in the idea of revenge, and that the reading of the work should be done within a dramatic framework that considers the development of characters and the conflicts they go through, away from viewing it as an invitation to replicate those behaviors in reality.
