The residents of the Al-Harazat neighborhood in Jeddah and those entering from its southern entrance face increasing traffic risks due to the narrowness of the road, its steep slopes, and numerous turns, in addition to the lack of lighting, making crossing during nighttime more difficult and dangerous. The suffering of road users is exacerbated by the frequent accidents and congestion, amidst calls for urgent engineering solutions that ensure the safety of pedestrians and accommodate the volume of traffic.
Violating Trucks Increase Risks
Aboud Abu Basel, a resident of Al-Harazat, explained to "Okaz" that the passage of heavy trucks through the southern entrance doubles the traffic risks, especially as some drivers use the road during prohibited times for trucks to avoid traffic monitoring, taking an alternative route that starts from the old Makkah road, passing through the Al-Harazat entrance and the Wetlands Road, reaching the Migration Road.
He added that the passage of trucks on this narrow and rugged path causes repeated accidents, while the breakdown of one of them in the middle of the road paralyzes traffic and causes vehicle congestion in both directions. He warned of the continuation of the current situation and the potential for serious accidents and loss of life, emphasizing that the road has become a daily danger that requires urgent intervention.
Darkness, Slopes, and Traffic Congestion
For his part, Ali Al-Ghamdi criticized the narrowness of the lanes at the Al-Harazat entrance at kilometer 14, calling for its duplication and the provision of necessary lighting.
He pointed out that the entrance turns into a traffic choke point, especially after dark and during weekend holidays, as vehicles accumulate in long queues due to accidents and incorrect overtaking that hinder traffic flow. Additionally, the breakdown of any truck or vehicle within the lane leads to a complete halt of movement until the road is cleared.
He clarified that the current design does not match the volume of daily traffic, calling for a reassessment of the entrance's situation and utilizing available spaces to widen the road, address congestion, and reduce accidents.
Bridge or Urgent Expansion
For his part, Sultan Abu Yazan called for a fundamental engineering solution to eliminate the dangers of the rugged entrance, suggesting the construction of a bridge that allows for smooth vehicle movement in both directions, starting from an area before the dam basin and extending alongside the entrance, which would help reduce congestion and limit the likelihood of accidents.
If the project cannot be implemented, he called for the urgent widening and duplication of the road, along with providing lighting and addressing the dangerous turns and slopes, stressing that the continuation of the current situation keeps road users facing daily risks that cannot be ignored.
He also emphasized the importance of intensifying traffic monitoring and regulating trucks that use the entrance in violation of instructions, to prevent it from being used as an alternative route to evade monitoring points, ensuring the safety of residents and road users.
The residents concluded their demands by urging the relevant authorities to take urgent action to address the situation of the southern entrance to Al-Harazat neighborhood and implement practical and sustainable solutions that match the volume of traffic, preserving lives and property, and ending the scene of repeated accidents and congestion on this vital road.
