“Peace, peace, O people of Mecca.. and how lucky are those who visited Jeddah”.. With this Saudi chant that has long been present in the celebrations and occasions of the western region, the members of the Kuwaiti group “Al-Mawj Al-Azraq” welcomed the Gulf Championship. The song began with the start of the tournament, and it quickly gained widespread acclaim and topped the charts. The voice was Kuwaiti, but the words and melody came from the memory of the place hosting the competitions.
The success of the work was not solely due to the occasion; the Kuwaiti brothers chose a color from the Saudi folk heritage and presented it to an audience that knows and appreciates it, as well as to a Gulf audience discovering a piece of the spirit of Mecca and Jeddah through it. In their choice, there is an appreciation for the richness of the musical heritage in the Kingdom, and an artistic intelligence that befits Kuwait's status and artistic leadership in the Gulf. They greeted the audience with what they love, and thus the song found its way to the people.
Here arises a question that goes beyond mere admiration for the work: What have we prepared artistically for a championship held on our land? The Gulf Championship, which originated from Prince Khalid Al-Faisal's idea, brings people together around football and opens up a wide space for art to narrate the story of the host city and its people. The Saudi color, with its diversity and richness, is capable of presenting new works for the championship that will remain in memory after the final whistle.
“Al-Mawj Al-Azraq” has gifted us a beautiful example of what a song can do when it knows its audience and its place. It is an opportunity for our artists to present works that stem from our heritage, carry their signature, and add a Saudi voice to the celebrations of the championship that matches its presence on our land.
