Yasser Al-Mashel resigned from the presidency of the Saudi Football Federation a year before the end of his term, following a series of failures that plagued the national team, the latest of which was its recent participation in the World Cup.
-In my opinion, the problem was not the lack of resources or support, but rather the poor decisions made by Al-Mashel and his board, which was the bigger issue that our dear "Abu Salman" faced throughout his presidency of the federation.
-There is no doubt that Al-Mashel's board had its positives, but they did not receive the attention that his negatives did, foremost among them decisions that were not always commensurate with the stage or the support and resources available to the federation.
-It was supposed - in my humble opinion - that Al-Mashel would have been satisfied with his first term and not insisted on continuing for a second term, especially after the indicators of public and media dissatisfaction became clear... but may stubbornness be cursed!
-The insistence on continuing despite the widening circle of criticism was not in the interest of Al-Mashel nor in the interest of our federation, and the outcome he reached today was a natural result of a journey that could have ended better had he made the decision to leave at the right time.
-One of the most important points that I believe Al-Mashel and his board did not capitalize on is the exceptional and unprecedented support that the Saudi Football Federation received. Financially, administratively, technically, and in terms of investment and marketing, the federation received significant support from various state sports institutions over the past years, especially from the Ministry of Sports, which provided the federation with support that I do not believe was available to a federation president and board in previous periods.
-Here, the question arises that deserves an answer... If the support is of this magnitude, where are the results that correspond to it? Why has this substantial support not been reflected more clearly on the national teams, on the development of competitions, on the performance of committees, and on the level of administrative and technical professionalism?
-Therefore, I see that support alone does not create success, but rather its proper investment is what transforms resources into achievements. Here, I specifically believe that Al-Mashel and his board did not succeed in investing the opportunity as they should have, which necessitated their departure from the scene at an inappropriate time.
-From this standpoint, I hope that the current president of the football federation, Badr Al-Raziza, and the members of his board, who are at the beginning of a difficult mission, will learn well from Al-Mashel's experience and that of his board, and not repeat the same mistakes. The new phase requires well-considered decisions and a board that does not hesitate to make the right decision even if it is difficult. Most importantly, the decisions should be based on clear criteria, away from flattery or narrow calculations, and perhaps the first real test for Al-Raziza's board will be in the committees' file.
-Some committees have been subject to widespread public and media criticism throughout the past period, and it was clear that there was a sense of dissatisfaction with their performance due to decisions that raised many questions, whether regarding the application of regulations and systems, or differing standards in some cases, or what sometimes appeared to be a duality in dealing with issues. Clubs and competitions in Saudi football have paid the price for some of these decisions, and the relationship with sports media has not always been at its best, with some disagreements reaching the courts.
-Therefore, the restructuring of the committees and the selection of suitable competencies should not be a formal decision, but rather a genuine reform step that restores confidence in the work of these committees and establishes clear and consistent standards that apply to everyone without exception.
-Another file that also needs serious review is the system related to the Professional League, especially concerning the continuity of the league president and its board members... The new phase requires a reconsideration of everything that can contribute to the development of the competition system, ensuring clarity of powers, defining responsibilities, and linking continuity in positions to performance and achievement levels.
To be clear, we do not want change for the sake of change, but rather we want to correct the course.
-The Al-Raziza Federation has a great opportunity to benefit from the support it will receive from the beloved Minister of Sports, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, and I say this clearly: I am not talking about this support out of flattery, but based on what we have seen over the past years of development and achievements in various sports sectors, as the Minister of Sports does not work solely from the position of a minister, but possesses accumulated experience in managing the sports system and dealing with its files and crises, in addition to his presidency of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
-Therefore, I see that the football federation has a real opportunity to benefit from this experience, especially since the success of any system does not depend solely on the size of the support, but on the wise selection of leaders and competencies capable of transforming this support into tangible results... This is what I hope the new federation will prioritize: choosing the right person for the right place, away from names and relationships, because the phase does not allow for more experiments.
-Perhaps I take this opportunity to talk about the Ministry of Sports to point out a point that I see as extremely important, and I hope the new federation, especially its president Badr Al-Raziza, will benefit from it, which is communication and interaction with the media... Sports media is not an enemy of the federation, even when it criticizes it, but is one of the most important parties that can help it discover flaws and correct the course... Therefore, I hope the federation will issue a clear directive that each committee should have an official spokesperson, whose task is to communicate with the media, respond to inquiries, and clarify decisions to the public.
-I also hope that communication will not be limited to official statements but will extend to holding press conferences from time to time and responding to public inquiries via social media, similar to what the Ministry of Sports does in terms of communication and coordination between its official spokesperson and the relevant entities and committees... Transparency does not weaken the federation, but rather strengthens it, and silence in the face of questions does not eliminate them but opens the door to speculations and rumors.
-A final whisper:
As for the national team, that is another story.
The recent failure cannot be reduced to the resignation of the federation president, nor to the name of a coach or player, because the issue is much larger than that... There are technical and administrative files that need serious attention, a comprehensive review, and a candid diagnosis of the reasons that have brought our national team to this stage, especially in light of the substantial support that Saudi sports receives.
But the discussion about the national team is lengthy, with many details that deserve to be discussed away from emotion and flattery. I will address it in a later article, God willing.
