I occasionally follow the ongoing debate about Saudi drama and how close it is to reality, as well as its ability to present the true and authentic story of Saudi society. This deep, probing dialogue is not an intellectual luxury, but a clear indication of a collective awareness of the importance of drama; as one of the most influential languages of human communication among peoples. Drama is no longer just a tool for entertainment and passing time; it has become one of the strongest tools of soft power that highlights the cultures of nations and conveys their stories and human richness to the world.
Due to my work and interest in the media, cultural, and literary fields, I find myself constantly in touch with this discussion; my literary and narrative passion inevitably intersects with dramatic work, in addition to my efforts to adapt some of my literary works into dramatic treatments. From this perspective, I believe that diagnosing the reality of Saudi drama and identifying its strengths and weaknesses should start from the very core: the story and its writers.
The story is the solid foundation upon which the entire craft of drama is built. If this backbone is shaken, the structure collapses regardless of the quality of production. Today, we are in dire need of stories that resemble us, that express our spirit and the details of our daily lives, rather than importing tales from other cultures and forcibly trying to impose them and dress them in Saudi attire.
Collaboration with Saudi writers and directors represents a strategic step towards building an industry that possesses a powerful message, addressing not only the domestic audience but confidently reaching out to international forums to highlight the significant movement and change taking place in the Kingdom. Hollywood and Bollywood have succeeded in leaving timeless global imprints thanks to the originality of their stories. Today, the Kingdom, as a leader of the Arab and Islamic worlds and the custodian of their extended history, is more deserving of creating drama that reflects this historical and cultural weight.
To achieve this desired renaissance, Saudi drama needs to activate a vital role similar to that of a "editor-in-chief" in journalism, or what is globally known as a "Creator." This is the person who understands the value of the visual and cultural dimensions of the text, excels at selecting ideas, distributing roles, and managing the creative vision from concept to screen. The absence of this guiding role leaves a significant void, while its presence aligns the craft and propels Saudi drama towards a more mature and impactful horizon.
