This year, the Ministry of Education has enacted many new laws, one of which is:
“If a student's absences reach 18 days without an excuse, they will be denied promotion to the next grade.”
I am sure there are students who will repeat their academic year despite not having committed any wrongdoing; the student, who is naturally a “child,” is not responsible for their attendance and absences except in rare cases.
As for the application of the law, there will not be complete fairness, as some school principals will be lenient while others will be strict in enforcing this law, just like the different natures of people.
But what does the Ministry of Education think about motivation and making the student inherently dislike unexcused absences?
Why can’t teachers be more entertaining? It’s true that no teacher can compete with the allure of technology and its entertainment devices. Honestly, not everything should be entertaining. Learning is hard, but in the end, it brings greater enjoyment than a ten-second video clip.
Most students have not discovered this truth because of the depressed teacher for whom the Ministry of Education periodically enacts laws that bind and alienate them from their profession and increase its difficulties.
Are Saudi teachers happy?!
We need a survey to find out the answer, although I feel that they are mostly unhappy and far removed from making decisions that concern them.
Instead of having students repeat the academic year, why doesn’t the ministry create an attractive educational space? It is difficult, yes, but not impossible. Form community partnerships with sports clubs, restaurants, and entertainment centers. The regular student deserves a reward; this aspect is completely absent in decisions that only punish the dropout and the absentee. Punishment is easy, while reform is a long and arduous path, but Saudi students deserve the best, the most enjoyable, and more.
