The Finnish Tourism Board has launched an unconventional initiative targeting singles from around the world, through a free trip that combines exploring the country, tasting its local dishes, and experiencing a social environment that may open the door to new friendships or serious relationships.
The initiative is named (Finnish Dinner Date), and it offers 16 participants from outside Finland the opportunity to travel in February 2027 to participate in a four-day program that includes accommodation, travel tickets, meals, and cultural activities at no cost to the guests.
Participants will be divided into two groups, each consisting of eight people, with the capital city of Helsinki hosting one of the experiences, while the city of Tampere, located in the Finnish lake region, will welcome the second group. Participants will not know which city they will be heading to until they are officially selected, making the destination the first surprise of the trip.
The communal dinner table represents the highlight of the program, as participants gather around dishes prepared by local chefs inspired by Finnish cuisine, in the presence of several Finnish singles, in an atmosphere that encourages dialogue and acquaintance away from traditional dating formats.
The organizing body confirmed that the initiative does not aim to arrange one-on-one meetings or guarantee finding a life partner, but rather to create a natural environment for communication between visitors and locals through food, culture, and shared experiences, with the possibility of some relationships developing into serious commitments if there is mutual interest.
The idea was inspired by a local phenomenon known as (Basket of Singles), which are distinctive shopping baskets used by some singles in grocery stores to playfully signal their desire to meet new people.
The initiative is part of a broader campaign to promote Finnish cuisine and introduce its food traditions, by highlighting dishes that characterize different regions of the country and linking them to innovative tourism and social experiences.
The Tourism Board has opened applications for singles from outside Finland, by sending a short video in English explaining the dishes the applicant chooses for the introductory dinner and the reasons for their selection, with the names of the selected participants to be announced at the beginning of December.
