The Egyptian artist Ashraf Abdel Baqi mocked critics of his famous theatrical experience "Masrah Masr," questioning what the attackers of the project have contributed to theater, instead of just criticizing it.
What have you contributed?
Abdel Baqi said, on the sidelines of his attendance at the opening of the Sharm El Sheikh Youth Theater Festival: "I wish that the critics of Masrah Masr would present something different instead of directing criticisms at the experience," announcing a session with a group of young artists, on the sidelines of the festival activities, to discuss theater, specifically comedy on its stage, relying on his experience that spans nearly 40 years in this field.
Rosewood
He explained that his theatrical journey began with his participation in the play "Rosewood," during which he presented more than 280 plays, ranging from amateur troupe performances to commercial theater, passing through the experiences of Teatro Masr and Masrah Masr, along with other theatrical experiments, noting that theater, like other fields, has witnessed changes and developments over the years.
Closure of theaters
Abdel Baqi confirmed that the nature of comedy has changed from the past, and this development is a natural thing that the artist must keep up with and interact with, criticizing the closure of a large number of theaters, whether they belong to the public or private sector, hoping for their reopening soon, which would contribute to revitalizing the theatrical movement and providing opportunities for more performances.
Previous criticisms
Abdel Baqi's statements come in light of previous criticisms directed by several artists towards the Masrah Masr experience, as some viewed it as having no relation to theater and criticized its association with the name of Egypt.
Artist Mohamed Sobhi described the Masrah Masr experience as "a lack of manners," especially regarding straying from the script, while artist Ahmed Maher considered it contributes to corrupting public taste. Artist Ahmed Adam stated that the performances of Masrah Masr are just sketches, while the late artist Samia Ayoub said that these performances have nothing to do with theater.
A Man and Six Women
On another note, Ashraf Abdel Baqi decided to film the 11th part of his famous series "A Man and Six Women," and he has already started preparations, as he recently met with the producer of the work, who presented him with the idea for the new part, which will feature the stars from previous parts along with a number of new stars.
The production company of the series has begun negotiations with its stars, taking into account the absence of the late artist Maha Abu Ouf from the scene. It is expected that the roles will be adjusted if the remaining stars agree: Leqa Al-Khamisi, Mona Arafa, Intisar, Samih Hussein, and others from the previous parts, and the series is supposed to be aired outside the Ramadan race on one of the electronic platforms.
