American doctor and surgeon of Egyptian descent Adam Hamoui has won a seat in the House of Representatives for the twelfth district in New Jersey, becoming the first Muslim to hold this position in the state's history.
With this victory, Adam transforms a career that has spanned over three decades of military service, field surgery, and humanitarian work in conflict zones into a political experience within the corridors of political work.
Hamoui's win at the age of 57 as an independent candidate came as a surprise, as he carved his path from a working-class background that emigrated from Egypt to New Jersey, reaching the halls of Congress, armed with a rich record of military and field relief service in some of the most conflict-ridden areas around the world.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, Hamoui's humble family emigrated to the United States when he was a baby, not yet 7 months old, settling in Jersey City before moving to Old Bridge, New Jersey, where he grew up.

Volunteered to work in Gaza
Hamoui's name gained prominence in 2024 when he volunteered with an American medical team to work in the Gaza Strip, where he and his colleagues were stranded for a period after Israeli forces took control of the Rafah crossing, refusing to leave until all team members, including American residents and citizens of other countries, were safely evacuated.
Hamoui relied on his humanitarian and military experience in his electoral campaign, presenting a program that calls for redirecting foreign policy towards diplomacy and humanitarian work, while reducing foreign military interventions.
From Iraq to Gaza
Hamoui began his military career in 1989 by joining the New Jersey National Guard, before earning his medical degree in 1996, and then joining active duty in the U.S. Army in 2003. He worked as a combat injury specialist during the Iraq War in 2004, reaching the rank of Major before retiring from military service in 2011. He participated in volunteer medical missions in Bosnia, Haiti, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and finally Gaza in two missions in 2024 and 2025.
In a statement from Gaza, he noted that the number of injuries among children he treated over three weeks in Gaza exceeded what he had seen in all other conflict zones combined, pointing to a severe shortage of medical supplies and ongoing bombardment.
Stopping military aid to Israel
His positions on the Israeli war on Gaza form a central part of his program, as he described what he witnessed in the sector as "genocide," calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel, imposing restrictions on arms exports to countries that violate human rights, and supporting Palestinian rights.
He called for reducing the budget of the U.S. Department of Defense, which exceeds one trillion dollars, ending foreign wars, and enhancing Congress's constitutional powers in decisions regarding war and the use of military force.
Domestically, Hamoui prioritizes issues related to veterans, healthcare, housing, education, and combating corruption, demanding a reduction in the influence of corporations and the wealthy in funding electoral campaigns, and preventing members of Congress from trading stocks.
From medicine to political work
In addition to his military service, Hamoui established his private medical practice in Princeton in 2013, worked as a surgeon in New Jersey hospitals, and earned an MBA from Rutgers University in 2018.
His arrival in Congress represents a notable transition from medical and humanitarian work to the legislative body, where he seeks to leverage his experience in war zones to push for an American policy that prioritizes diplomacy and civilian protection, while reconsidering military spending and U.S. foreign priorities.
