U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged his Republican Party's loss in the midterm elections for Congress. He considered that the Iran war was one of the factors behind the widespread losses suffered by the Republicans.
This is how things go
In a phone interview with the "Wall Street Journal" on Tuesday evening (Eastern Time), Trump confirmed that he does not regret launching the war earlier this year, describing the election results by saying: "This is how things go sometimes."
In response to a question about whether the war contributed to the Republicans' poor performance: "Iran was one of the factors."
He added that he does not reconsider his decision to launch the war, despite its impact on his administration's popularity, saying: "I don't think about it. I did the right thing, and I would do it again."
Trump considered that rising oil prices, rather than the war itself, were the biggest political burden on the Republicans, pointing to the increase in gasoline and diesel prices as a result of the conflict, which angered American voters.
No changes to the president's team
Trump rejected the idea that the results were a rebuke of his presidential performance, despite the Republicans' losses in states that lean heavily Republican, such as Kansas, South Carolina, and Texas, and a noticeable decline in his approval ratings in many states.
He said: "It was a fleeting moment, and I wasn't on the ballots," adding that "the biggest problem is that I wasn't on the ballots."
Trump believed that voters were not punishing Republicans due to their dissatisfaction with economic conditions or allegations of corruption within his administration. He added that he does not regret not addressing the economy more frequently during his campaign.
Regarding changes within his administration, Trump stated that he does not intend to make any adjustments to his team, expressing his support for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who led the military effort in Iran, saying: "I think he’s really great."
Trump acknowledged that some Republican candidates who ran in the elections "could have performed better," adding: "Some of them had many weaknesses, and it was clear that they were not acceptable to voters," he continued: "You know, one can only do so much."
Looking forward to working with Democrats
Trump personally supported several candidates who lost the elections, including Republican Senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham and Republican Attorney General of Texas Ken Paxton, who lost the Senate race to his Democratic opponent James Talarico.
Trump said: "I tried to help them," adding about Graham and Paxton: "Lindsey worked hard, and they worked hard, but they didn’t succeed."
Trump did not question the validity of the election results, stating that he looks forward to working with Democrats, but warned that he might resort to using his veto power if necessary. He continued: "I think we will work with the Democrats, and we will understand each other well. If that doesn’t happen, we will be very tough on them, and they will be very tough on us."
He did not specify the names of the Democrats he believes he could work well with.
