The Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, Adam Hamilton, achieved a stunning upset by defeating Republican Senator Roger Marshall in Kansas, seizing a seat that was considered secure for Republicans.
Hamilton's historic victory ended a 94-year streak of continuous defeats for Democrats in Kansas Senate elections, the longest of its kind in the United States.
The race saw spending of about $110 million, a record in a state known for lower campaign costs compared to other states.
Despite the intense efforts by Republicans to salvage Marshall's campaign, including the participation of President Donald Trump in two campaign rallies in the state during October, the Republican senator was unable to win a second term.
Hamilton managed to attract moderate Republicans and independent voters who expressed dissatisfaction with rising living costs, according to the Associated Press.
Hamilton significantly outperformed Marshall in fundraising, especially from Kansas residents, while Democratic groups pumped tens of millions of dollars into the race.
This support helped Democrats overcome Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance's efforts to rally the Republican base through campaign rallies in recent weeks.
It is noteworthy that Hamilton is the founding pastor of the "Resurrection Church" in the Kansas City area, which has about 25,000 members.
The last Democrat to win a Senate election in Kansas was attorney George McGill in 1932.
The state has not seen a truly close race since 1974, when Republican Bob Dole won a second term by less than two percentage points, following the Watergate scandal that forced former President Richard Nixon to resign. Hamilton benefited from political shifts that have occurred in Kansas in recent years.
Although the state is considered a Republican stronghold, it has a large block of moderate voters who have repeatedly supported Democratic candidates in gubernatorial elections. The suburbs of Kansas City, near Missouri, have become more Democratic-leaning, making it easier for the party to compete in statewide elections and win the most populous counties.
