American of Palestinian descent Abeer Qawas has achieved a historic victory by winning a seat in the New York State Senate, becoming the first hijab-wearing Palestinian American woman to reach the state legislature, in a remarkable achievement that enhances the presence of the Palestinian and Arab community in the American political scene.
Qawas announced her victory through her account on the platform (X) with a brief statement saying: "We made history," referring to the result she achieved in the twelfth district in Queens, after receiving about 75% of the votes according to preliminary results following the counting of most ballots.
Qawas's victory came with the support of New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of America, after she successfully translated her lead in the Democratic primary into a decisive victory in the final race.
Qawas hails from a Palestinian family that was displaced to Jordan in 1948 before moving to the United States, where she was born and raised in New York. Her family's experience with displacement and migration, along with her father's earlier detention and deportation, were among the key factors that motivated her to engage in public service and political activism.
Her campaign focused on issues of healthcare, housing, transportation, and immigrant rights, under the slogan (Funding Dignity and Fighting Destruction), and she called for directing public resources towards the needs of the population and enhancing social justice and essential services.
Qawas's victory is seen as a significant milestone in the political participation of Americans of Palestinian descent, as it grants the Palestinian community an unprecedented presence within one of the most important legislative institutions in New York State.
