The American billionaire Elon Musk broke his silence following the failure of his political gamble to support Republican candidates in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, after spending nearly $500 million to back candidates across the United States, at a time when Democrats achieved significant electoral gains.
The founder of SpaceX and Tesla commented on the election results via his platform X, in two sarcastic posts, writing: "Data centers in space look very appealing right now," before adding: "It seems the electoral laser beams I intervened with in the elections did not succeed this time."
Musk's remarks came less than an hour after newly elected Democratic Senator from Texas, Jim Talarico, announced his electoral victory during a rally for his supporters in Austin, where he indirectly criticized Musk and President Donald Trump, speaking about the influence of billionaires and tech companies in shaping public opinion and American politics.
Talarico: We fought the battle against hundreds of millions of dollars
In his speech following the announcement of the results, Talarico stated that his campaign entered the race as the underdog, but faced electoral spending exceeding $300 million, along with negative ads, smear campaigns, fake foreign accounts, and AI-generated fake videos.
He added that the battle was not merely a competition between candidates, but a confrontation with a vast system of financial and media interests seeking to influence voters' choices.
Talarico stated that citizens, despite their political differences, aspire to achieve the same goals, but he accused billionaires who control the algorithms of social media platforms, television networks, and political influence channels of fueling divisions among Americans.
He added: "The real battle in this country is not between the right and the left, but between those at the top and those at the bottom," considering that the unity of citizens represents a threat to the interests of the wealthy and powerful.
He continued that the powerful seek to divide society based on party affiliation, race, gender, religion, and culture, so that citizens do not notice what he described as the draining of their wealth and interests, emphasizing that voters sent a message that they would not accept the continuation of these divisions.
Talarico also criticized, without directly naming Trump, what he described as the transformation of American politics over the past decade into a battleground for personal conflicts, provocations, and media confrontations, calling for a different political approach based on dialogue and rapprochement among citizens.
Half a billion dollars in the most expensive American election race
The race for the Senate seat in Texas witnessed unprecedented advertising spending, with total campaign-related expenditures exceeding $500 million, according to data tracking advertisements included in the original report.
The competition was between Republican Attorney General of Texas Ken Paxton and Democratic candidate Jim Talarico, amid extensive intervention from political action committees and external groups supporting the candidates.
External groups supporting Paxton spent about $239 million, more than five times the amounts spent by the largest groups allied with the Democrats, which totaled about $45 million.
The Republican political action committee "Texas PAC" accounted for about $149 million of the spending supporting Paxton, after being established with support from the Senate Leadership Fund, the most prominent independent Republican entity supporting party candidates in the elections.
$158 million from Musk to support Republicans
Federal financial disclosures showed that Musk, who lives in Texas and has moved the headquarters of several of his companies there, including SpaceX, Tesla, and X, contributed about $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund.
According to the data, the fund later transferred similar amounts to the "Texas PAC," which financed a large portion of the electoral spending supporting Paxton.
A significant part of the Republican funding came relatively late in the election campaign, as the "MAGA Inc." committee associated with Trump did not begin extensive advertising spending until early September.
In this context, Republican donor and oil businessman Dan Eberhart stated that the significant financial support arrived for Paxton's campaign at the right moment, considering it a crucial boost against the Democratic challenger.
Talarico relies on grassroots donations
In contrast, Talarico attempted to compensate for the large gap in external spending by relying on small individual donations and rallying grassroots support.
His campaign announced that it raised $64 million from July to September, which is more than three times the amount raised by Paxton's campaign, noting that 97% of the donations were under $100.
Talarico spent about $61 million on ads by September, according to data from Ad Impact, while the largest external Democratic committee supporting him, "Lone Star Rising PAC," spent about $19.3 million.
Talarico remained slightly ahead but consistently in the polls against his Republican opponent, although the margin often remained within the margin of error, making the race one of the most competitive electoral contests at the state level in Texas since 1994, according to statements reported by the expert Henson.
AI and negative ads at the heart of the battle
The competition was not limited to financial spending, but extended to intensive advertising campaigns targeting Talarico's positions on controversial social and cultural issues within American society.
Ads funded by groups supporting Paxton focused on portraying Talarico as being out of touch with the conservative values held by a segment of voters in Texas.
Some ads included accusations against him of supporting gender transition procedures for minors at the expense of taxpayers, while other ads used phrases aimed at stirring controversy regarding his positions on gender identity issues.
However, the fact-checking site Politifact classified one claim related to Talarico's support for gender transition surgeries for children as false, clarifying that the Democratic candidate opposed a law passed in 2023 that bans certain forms of medical care related to gender transition for minors, but he stated his opposition to performing gender reassignment surgeries for children.
Additionally, an analysis by FactCheck.org, based on data from Ad Impact, indicated that Republican groups spent over $100 million since August 1 on more than 200 ads accusing Democrats of supporting gender transition procedures for children.
One of Paxton's campaign ads used an AI-generated clip showing Talarico reading from a fictional religious text titled "The Gospel of King James (Talarico)," which included excerpts from his previous statements, including describing God as gender-neutral.
FactCheck.org noted that the ad omitted important contexts related to the statements used in it.
In contrast, Talarico described his Republican opponent Ken Paxton as "the most corrupt politician in Texas," referring to his controversial political and legal record.
The Texas House of Representatives, which was controlled by Republicans, voted in 2023 to impeach Paxton in preparation for his removal, based on allegations of abuse of power, but the state Senate acquitted him of those charges.
The struggle for money and influence raises questions about American democracy
The results of the race in Texas highlight the increasing role of massive money, independent political groups, and tech companies in shaping American electoral campaigns, especially with the growing use of digital ads and AI technologies to influence voters.
Moreover, Talarico's statements reopened the discussion about the influence of billionaires and social media platform owners in political life, and the extent to which grassroots-funded campaigns can compete with the massive funding provided by major economic and political interests.
