This trend has seen a noticeable spread in recent times, coinciding with the rise in hotel prices, as many seniors and early retirees, who own additional homes and have ample time to travel, found it to be a practical option for travel and relaxation without significant financial burdens.
Exchanges occur through several mechanisms, including each party staying in the other's home during the same period, or hosting one of the exchangers with the understanding that the second party will return the visit at a later time. Experiences have also shown specific preferences among participants, as women often tend to exchange with other women, while some teachers prefer to exchange homes with public sector employees rather than businesspeople.
Among these experiences, Xiao Bing, a former operations manager who retired early from Guangdong Province, exchanged his apartment for a villa located in the suburbs of Guizhou Province, where he spent about 20 days and shared the homeowners' daily activities and cooking and living times. Retired engineer Li Feng from Xi'an City has also been accustomed to exchanging her home twice a year, and during one of her trips, she experienced staying in a villa with hot springs in Guangdong Province.
Despite the increasing interest in the idea, legal experts have warned of some potential risks, such as property damage or breaches of privacy, urging those interested in trying the experience to document agreements in writing, verify the identities of the participating parties, and prepare clear records of the contents of the homes before handing over the keys.
