Family disputes have returned to the forefront of American star Britney Spears' life, after she directed sharp criticisms at her sister Jamie Lynn Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline, revealing experiences she described as harsh, and her feeling of being exploited and mistreated by those closest to her, before announcing her desire to distance herself from her family and seek a new beginning with other people.
Spears shared, through her Instagram account, a post accompanied by a picture of actress Dakota Fanning from the 2003 film "Uptown Girls," in which she talked about situations she claimed to have faced during visits to her sister in Louisiana, indicating that Jamie Lynn prevented her from holding her daughter Ivy, even once, during visits that lasted two weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Harsh accusations against her ex-husband and sister
Britney's criticisms did not stop at her sister but extended to her ex-husband Kevin Federline, as she accused him of restricting her during her visits to her children, claiming that he even prevented her from using the bathroom when she went to pick them up from his house.
The American star wrote in her post: "They made me feel like a servant, and I know all the things they did behind my back, and all I did was work... I will find a new family."
Britney did not clarify the direct reason behind publishing these statements at this time, but her post came days after a report published by "Page Six," which revealed that Federline was facing a financial crisis related to accumulated debts on his credit card.
Financial debts and the end of child support
According to official documents referenced in the report, Federline owes City National Bank at least $117,000 related to a credit card, a line of credit, and overdraft facilities, under an agreement he signed in late November 2024, which is the same period during which Spears made her last payment for their children's support.
Britney Spears, who was married to Federline between 2004 and 2007, was paying him $40,000 monthly for the care of their children while they were living in Hawaii, before the amount decreased to $20,000 after their eldest son Sean Preston turned 18 in 2023, and the payments continued until their second son Jayden James graduated from high school.
In a related context, Bank of America had previously filed a lawsuit against Federline in February, demanding he pay a little over $12,000, before the lawsuit was withdrawn four months later following a settlement.
Old disputes resurface
The roots of the dispute between Britney and her sister Jamie Lynn go back several years, specifically to the period of the legal conservatorship imposed on the singer, which sparked widespread controversy before officially ending in November 2021, after lasting nearly 13 years.
Britney had repeatedly spoken about her feeling of being abandoned by her family members, considering that they did not provide her with enough support to free herself from the constraints imposed on her during the conservatorship, which left a significant impact on her relationship with them.
The confrontation between the sisters renewed in 2022, following Jamie Lynn's release of her memoir titled "Things I Should Have Said," in which she discussed her sister's behavior, describing it as "volatile" and "paranoid," which prompted Britney to respond with sharp criticisms, calling her sister at that time a "selfish child."
Kevin Federline also re-entered the dispute after releasing his memoir last year titled "You Thought You Knew," with Britney describing the book as "extremely painful," indicating the ongoing tension between them despite the years that have passed since their separation.
