The Lebanese authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle a massive shipment of cocaine weighing 46.7 kilograms, which was hidden inside the luggage of a traveler coming from Ghana, in an operation described by the General Security as the largest of its kind in the history of Rafic Hariri International Airport.
The Lebanese General Directorate of General Security announced that the operation was carried out on Saturday night, in coordination with customs, and resulted in the seizure of the shipment in the possession of a Syrian traveler who arrived in Beirut from the Ghanaian capital, Accra, on a Middle East Airlines flight.
The General Security media office clarified in a statement that inspection operations revealed 40 packages containing cocaine, which were professionally concealed within the traveler's luggage, along with electronic tracking devices suspected of being used in the smuggling operation.
The statement added that the traveler was arrested and the seized items were confiscated, while investigations continue under the supervision of the competent judiciary to uncover the circumstances of the operation, identify the parties that were to receive the shipment, and track down the remaining individuals involved in the network.
