The Jordanian authorities thwarted, on Sunday, an attempt to smuggle two million narcotic pills through the Nasib border crossing with Syria, known as Jaber, just days after its reopening following its closure due to Jordanian airstrikes targeting sites in southern Syria.
The spokesperson for the Public Security Directorate in Jordan announced in a statement that the personnel in the Anti-Narcotics Department at the Jaber crossing, in coordination with Jordanian customs and security agencies, managed to thwart the smuggling attempt and seize the quantity.
He stated that the suspicion of the cargo vehicle arose after receiving information about it, and it was seized immediately upon its attempted entry and thoroughly searched, revealing two million narcotic pills hidden in secret compartments prepared within the vehicle for this purpose. He noted that the shipment was intended for re-smuggling to one of the neighboring countries, indicating that investigations into the case had begun.
The border strip between Jordan and Syria is witnessing ongoing security developments, amid continued attempts to smuggle drugs and infiltrate across the borders, coinciding with tensions that have occurred in the region over the past few days.
On October 27, Syrian authorities closed the Nasib border crossing with Jordan, known as Jaber on the Jordanian side, and suspended the movement of travelers and trucks in both directions, following Jordanian airstrikes targeting sites in the Daraa and Sweida governorates in southern Syria, which resulted in the deaths of seven people, while Damascus described the strikes as a violation of Syrian sovereignty.
The crossing was reopened following a phone call between Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and his Syrian counterpart Asaad al-Shabani, during which both sides emphasized the importance of containing the repercussions of recent developments and not allowing them to affect bilateral relations.
The Jordanian army announced yesterday, Saturday, that it had thwarted an attempt by an armed group consisting of 14 individuals to infiltrate from Syrian territory into Jordan, after a clash with the Jordanian border guards.
It is worth noting that the Jaber crossing, which corresponds to the Nasib crossing on the Syrian side, is considered the main land outlet for the movement of travelers and trade between the two countries, representing an important corridor for the movement of trucks and goods heading to and from Syria, and it is traversed by an international road linking Syrian territory with Jordan and the Gulf states.
