Tanzania announced today the discovery of natural gas reserves estimated at around 223 billion cubic feet in the Mnazi Bay area in the south of the country, marking the first gas discovery recorded in over 10 years.
The Tanzanian Minister of Energy, Juma Homera, reported that the discovery was made at the Kasa-1 XST2 well, which was explored in collaboration between the state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and a French company. He indicated that the corporation and the company drilled three wells, namely MB-5, MS-2, and Kasa-1 XST2, as part of efforts to enhance natural gas supplies in the country, while the French company announced that production from the new discovery could begin as early as next month.
According to data from regulatory bodies in the energy sector, Tanzania's discovered natural gas reserves amounted to approximately 57.5 trillion standard cubic feet before the announcement of the new discovery.
