Pharmaceutical companies producing weight loss and diabetes injections from the "GLP-1" class, including "Wegovy," "Mounjaro," and "Ozempic," are facing dozens of lawsuits in the United States filed by patients who claim to have suffered vision loss as a result of using these drugs.
Plaintiffs say that the injections have caused them to develop non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), known as "eye stroke," a condition that occurs due to interruption or reduced blood flow to the optic nerve, which can lead to sudden and permanent vision loss.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the law firm "Witz & Luxenberg," specializing in personal injury cases, has filed nearly 100 lawsuits against "Novo Nordisk," the producer of the drugs "Wegovy" and "Ozempic," related to patients suffering from optic nerve damage while using these medications.
Several patients reported experiencing sudden vision loss after starting treatment with "Ozempic," before being diagnosed with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.
This condition occurs due to reduced or blocked blood flow to the optic nerve, depriving it of oxygen, and can cause permanent vision loss, with no curative treatment available. Older adults, smokers, and those with diabetes and high blood pressure are considered the most at risk for developing it.
In this context, Professor Drew Carey from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine explained that the available data is still insufficient to definitively determine the impact of "GLP-1" drugs, although preliminary estimates suggest that the risk of developing the condition may double, particularly among patients more susceptible to complications.
A large-scale analysis published in the journal "JAMA Network Open" revealed a 76% increased risk of developing non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy among users of the drugs "semaglutide" and "tirzepatide," compared to diabetes patients using other treatments, while emphasizing that the overall risk of developing the condition remains low.
In contrast, "Novo Nordisk" denied the existence of a direct causal relationship between its medications and vision loss, citing a company-funded analysis that did not find an increase in cases of optic nerve damage compared to users of a placebo.
The company confirmed that the lawsuits filed against it in the United States lack a basis, stressing its intention to defend its position and continue investigating reports related to the potential link between "semaglutide" and this condition, in collaboration with health authorities.
Experts indicate that non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy may be up to 10 times more common among individuals with type 2 diabetes, complicating the distinction between the potential effects of the medications and complications related to the disease itself, making it a significant challenge to prove causation in the lawsuits.
Despite ongoing research to determine the nature of these risks and their connection to weight loss and diabetes medications, experts assert that the available results do not warrant panic among patients, given the lack of definitive causal relationship.
