The World Health Organization has updated its recommendations regarding vaccination and prevention against six infectious diseases, as part of a review of global vaccine policies and the enhancement of protection against vaccine-preventable diseases.
The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) of the organization recommended the adoption of three doses of the polio vaccine for all infants, as part of the new updates related to immunization programs.
Enhancing Protection Against Polio
This recommendation comes amid ongoing international efforts to eradicate polio, emphasizing the importance of completing vaccine doses and increasing coverage levels among children, especially in areas where the risk of virus transmission remains.
The expert group discussed several issues related to immunization and vaccines, including polio and other infectious diseases, during its recent meeting at the WHO headquarters in Geneva from October 5 to 8, before issuing its updated recommendations.
Ongoing Review of Vaccines
The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization is the highest advisory body for the World Health Organization in the field of vaccine policies and immunization, responsible for reviewing scientific evidence and providing recommendations on the use of vaccines and vaccination programs globally.
Its tasks include assessing updates related to vaccine effectiveness, dosing schedules, and target groups, as well as reviewing policies related to addressing outbreaks of infectious diseases and improving vaccine access for the most vulnerable populations.
