An American Airlines flight was forced to change its course and land in New York after 6 out of 8 restrooms became inoperable during a long flight across the Atlantic, leaving only two functioning restrooms to serve 287 passengers and crew members.
The flight number "AA37" was headed from Madrid to Dallas Fort Worth on a Boeing 777, before the crew decided not to continue to its original destination and instead head to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Only two restrooms for 287 people
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the crew reported a "lack of sufficient usable restrooms" after 6 restrooms went out of service during the flight.
With only two working restrooms remaining, the crew deemed that continuing the long flight to Dallas was no longer appropriate and made the decision to divert the aircraft to New York.
The authorities have not yet announced the cause of the malfunction that led to the large number of restrooms becoming inoperable, and reports did not indicate any issues with the aircraft's engines or primary control systems.
"We only have two restrooms"
Communications between the pilots and air traffic control highlighted the severity of the problem, as one pilot informed the controllers during the approach to New York that the flight only had two usable restrooms left.
The crew declared a "Pan-Pan" situation, which is an international aviation signal used when an aircraft faces an urgent situation requiring attention, but does not pose an immediate threat to the lives of those on board, unlike a "Mayday" distress call.
Fuel for more than 4 hours
The aircraft still had enough fuel for more than 4 hours of flight when it was decided to divert to New York, which resulted in a higher than normal weight upon landing.
Landing at a higher weight requires additional operational procedures due to increased pressure on the brakes and the potential for overheating; however, the aircraft landed safely at John F. Kennedy Airport without reporting any injuries.
Stopped for more than 3 hours
The aircraft remained on the ground in New York for more than 3 hours before resuming its journey to Dallas Fort Worth.
The original flight from Madrid to Dallas was scheduled to take about 10 hours, before the unusual malfunction turned a transatlantic flight into an emergency stop in New York.
American Airlines has not disclosed technical details explaining why 6 restrooms became inoperable at the same time, with confirmed information limited to the issue being related to the lack of a sufficient number of usable restrooms, rather than a malfunction affecting the aircraft's ability to fly.
