The death of a young employee working at a specialized institute for plague research and control in the Irkutsk region of Russian Siberia has raised widespread health concerns, while authorities have placed around 200 people who had contact with her under medical surveillance and taken isolation and containment measures, amid unconfirmed reports of a possible case of pneumonic plague.
Daria Shibelova, 28 years old and working at the Irkutsk Institute for Plague Control in Siberia and the Far East, died on October 2 after being taken to the hospital due to a deterioration in her health.
Russian health authorities stated that the cause of death recorded so far is "pneumonia of unknown origin," confirming that investigations and tests are ongoing to determine the nature of the illness that affected her.
About 200 people under surveillance
Russian reports indicated that authorities have placed around 200 people who were in contact with the employee under surveillance or quarantine, while more than 60 staff members from the institute have been isolated, and precautionary measures have been taken at the hospital in Shilykhov where she died.
The head of the Russian health oversight agency "Rospotrebnadzor," Anna Popova, traveled to the area to monitor the situation and hold an emergency meeting with local officials.
Tests among the deceased's contacts showed two cases infected with the coronavirus and two cases with rhinoviruses causing colds, while authorities stated that no other infections related to a serious contagious disease have been recorded so far.
Did she die of the plague?
Media and Russian accounts circulated narratives suggesting a possible case of pneumonic plague for Shibelova following an incident inside the lab, including claims of a broken test tube containing bacteria that cause the disease.
However, the Russian health oversight agency denied finding any evidence of an incident during the handling of pathogens at the institute, stating that tests on biological samples taken from the employee did not reveal any microorganisms related to her professional work.
The governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev, emphasized that the situation is "under control," confirming that all individuals known to have been in contact with the employee have been identified and subjected to examination and medical surveillance, with no new cases reported among the institute's staff in recent days.
World Health Organization: Low risk
The World Health Organization stated that it is monitoring developments, and that the information available so far indicates that the level of risk to the general population is low, with a new risk assessment to be conducted when additional information becomes available.
In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is closely monitoring the situation, while President Trump expressed his country's readiness to provide assistance to Russia if needed.
Plague is a bacterial disease caused by the bacterium "Yersinia pestis," and it still exists naturally among some rodents and fleas in parts of Siberia, although human infections in Russia are rare. The disease can be treated with antibiotics if diagnosed early.
