Wide areas of southeastern and eastern Spain have experienced heavy rainfall and flooding in recent days, resulting in the death of an elderly woman and the rescue of dozens of people, while authorities continued to deal with the aftermath of the storm and warned of sudden floods in several regions.
The authorities in the region of Castilla-La Mancha announced the death of a 102-year-old woman after water flooded her home in the town of Madridejas, which saw about 142 liters of rain per square meter. Meanwhile, firefighting teams carried out rescue operations for around 90 people who were trapped by the water.
The heavy rains caused streets and homes to be submerged, swept away several cars, while the effects of the low-pressure system extended to wide areas along the eastern coast of Spain, particularly Valencia, Alicante, and Castellón.
In the Valencia region, emergency services reported that they dealt with 289 incidents related to the rain between Thursday morning and Saturday evening, including 149 incidents in Valencia province, 78 in Alicante, and 62 in Castellón. Valencia, Alicante, and Elche were among the areas that recorded the most interventions by emergency teams.
Some areas recorded large amounts of rain in a short period; accumulations in the La Morta area of Alicante province exceeded 186 liters per square meter during one of the storms, leading to the formation of water pools and floods in several areas.
The wave of severe weather is attributed to a state of atmospheric instability associated with the influx of cold air in the upper layers of the atmosphere along with large amounts of moisture flowing in from the Mediterranean Sea, factors that contributed to the formation of strong storms and continuous heavy rain.
Despite a decrease in the level of maximum warnings in some areas, the Spanish Meteorological Agency maintained warnings about the continuation of storms and heavy rain in parts of the eastern coast, with the ongoing possibility of sudden flooding, especially in low-lying areas and riverbeds that have become saturated with water in recent days.
In the Murcia region, authorities also expected continued chances of rain and storms, with a yellow warning in the northwestern part of the region during Sunday hours, and the possibility of recording up to 15 liters per square meter within one hour.
These floods come nearly two years after the devastating flooding disaster that struck the Valencia region in October 2024, which made the Spanish authorities more stringent in dealing with weather warnings and flood risks in flood-prone areas.
Authorities indicate that the continuation of rain over areas that have already experienced significant accumulations increases the risk of sudden flooding, even as the intensity of the weather situation decreases compared to its peak, keeping emergency teams on alert for any new developments.
