A transatlantic flight's journey turned into an in-flight emergency after smoke filled the cabin of a Delta Airlines aircraft, prompting the crew to declare an emergency, change the flight path, and make an emergency landing in Portugal, amid a wide mobilization of emergency services.
The aircraft, an Airbus A330, was on a flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Boston, USA, when smoke was detected in the cabin, leading the crew to decide on an unplanned landing at Porto Airport in northern Portugal.
There were 296 passengers on board, and sources from the Portuguese civil protection agency reported that an alert was issued before landing, allowing emergency teams to prepare to deal with the aircraft upon its arrival.
During the flight, about 12 passengers required oxygen after being affected by the presence of smoke in the cabin, according to the Daily Mail.
After the plane safely landed at Porto Airport, 14 passengers received medical care due to smoke exposure, with four of them being transferred to the hospital due to experiencing mild respiratory difficulties.
São João Hospital in Porto confirmed the reception of two men from the flight in the emergency department, stating that both were suffering from mild respiratory symptoms related to smoke inhalation, and their conditions were stable.
In the vicinity of the airport, Portuguese authorities mobilized firefighting teams, police, and ambulances in anticipation of any developments during the aircraft's landing, to secure passenger evacuation operations and provide medical care to the injured.
After the safe landing, the relevant authorities began to address the aircraft and investigate the source of the smoke and the circumstances surrounding its appearance in the cabin, while no final details regarding the cause of the incident were available.
