In a new security achievement against organized smuggling gangs, Libyan security forces succeeded in dismantling a highly complex international gang that used digital applications and exchange companies as a cover to manage drug trafficking and smuggle its massive financial returns abroad.
The Libyan Drug Control and Psychotropic Substances Agency announced, through the Border Crossing Investigations Office at "Wazin" border, the thwarting of an attempt to smuggle 25 kilograms of hashish and the arrest of one of the active members of the criminal organization, which includes multiple nationalities. The agency explained that the operation began with accurate intelligence information, which led to the main suspect being lured into a well-planned ambush that resulted in the seizure of the shipment and his arrest in the act.
During the initial investigations, the suspect revealed shocking surprises, providing detailed confessions that uncovered the extent of the group's criminal activity, as he admitted to directly participating in the transport of drugs and facilitating their crossing of borders in 15 previous successful operations, in exchange for receiving huge sums of money.
The investigations unveiled a highly intelligent administrative and financial method, as the network relied on encrypted communication applications to coordinate routes and determine delivery and receipt points to evade security monitoring. The operation did not stop at smuggling; it extended to money laundering by utilizing exchange companies and rapid transfer applications to collect the millions generated from the drug trade, then immediately transferring them to foreign accounts to avoid banking scrutiny.
Libyan authorities confirmed the continuation of investigations and security pursuits to apprehend the remaining fleeing members of the network both inside and outside the country.
