The story of the young man "Abdullah," who was shot dead while waiting for a distribution of aid in the Gaza Strip, was not just an isolated incident, but merely the tip of the iceberg for a phenomenon documented by numbers and data. The average number of victims near distribution points jumped from 30 people monthly before the entry of the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" to over 500 fatalities monthly, with the total number of victims exceeding 1,300, according to data from the international conflict monitoring organization "Aklid."
At the heart of the investigative report prepared by the "BBC," two testimonies from whistleblowers who refused to reveal their identities stand out. The first is a truck driver whose truck was contracted to work for the food distribution entity, who recorded hidden video clips with his phone showing heavy gunfire directed at thousands of hungry people gathered at distribution point number 4.
The more serious testimony came from a soldier named "Mikhail," who revealed the use of the concept of "phantom lines" that are not announced to the residents, where the field is divided into a "green line" where warning shots are fired, and a "red line" where the use of deadly force is immediately permitted against anyone crossing it from the residents who are merely trying to obtain flour, amid a state of rampant chaos and confusion in field instructions.
To circumvent the ban on foreign journalists entering the Strip, the investigative team used advanced digital verification techniques, subjecting the leaked video clips to sound analysis software to determine the trajectories and timing of the bullets, and matching them with satellite images and accurately determining geographical locations.
Experts and projectile analysts confirmed that the gunfire was directed straight from the positions of the armed forces behind the distribution centers towards the crowds gathered on the bridge in fear of starvation.
For his part, British-Egyptian surgeon Tawfiq Omar conveyed his shocking observations from inside the hospitals that received dozens of patients with live gunshot wounds in the upper parts of their bodies while trying to obtain food rations.
These pieces of evidence and testimonies prompted the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, to describe what is happening as a serious violation of international humanitarian law, emphasizing that the killing of hundreds of civilians while they are trying to survive amounts to crimes that require accountability and urgent international prosecution.
