Shocking scenes published on the morning of Eid al-Adha have once again taken center stage in the media landscape of Morocco, following a police chase and a judicial trial, in which the content creator known as "Bensnas" appeared once more before the criminal appeals chamber at the Court of Appeal in Rabat, after being transferred from Tamesna prison to the courthouse. This was in connection with the controversial case in which he was initially sentenced to eight months of imprisonment and a financial fine.
The story, which dates back to last May, began when the accused published a video documenting the skinning and cooking of a dead dog on the eve of Eid al-Adha, linking his act to the crisis of rising prices and the cost of sacrificial animals. This was considered by human rights activists and civil society groups as a "blatant provocation to religious feelings and public morals."
In the details of the confrontation inside the courtroom, the YouTuber attempted to justify his actions before the presiding judge by stating that he found the dog run over in the street, and he decided to take it home to document its skinning, cooking, and eating, driven by the desire to gain views and advertising revenue through the "YouTube" platform, denying any intention to offend religious values.
Despite the defense's efforts and the clarifications provided, the court decided to postpone the discussion of the case until the beginning of next October, in order to summon the human rights associations that have positioned themselves as civil parties in the case, some of which have called for the maximum penalties to protect the digital and societal environment from such transgressions.
