The masks have fallen, and an Egyptian media figure has stepped away from the screen to face a five-year prison sentence, after his personal phone became a decisive piece of evidence revealing his management of a criminal gang specializing in selling illusions to those wishing to travel.
The Cairo Appeals Criminal Court opens today (Sunday) the file of one of the largest fraud and visa forgery cases, as the judiciary considers the appeal of four defendants (including a prominent media figure and a fugitive defendant) against the first-degree ruling sentencing them to five years in prison, following their involvement in fabricating fake employment contracts and travel visas attributed to foreign companies.
The story began with confidential information received by the General Administration of Public Funds Investigation in Egypt, warning of suspicious activity related to issuing counterfeit visas. After legal procedures were taken and a public prosecution warrant was issued, the authorities surprised the defendants in a sudden security raid that resulted in the arrest of the first, second, and third defendants.
Inside the premises, the surprise was not only in the fall but also in the volume of documents and seals seized in their possession:
- 66 passports bearing counterfeit foreign visas in the names of different citizens.
- 22 completely fabricated travel visas ready for delivery.
- Fake expatriate seals and forms, including a factory seal attributed to the Ministry of Manpower.
- Fake employment contracts for a foreign company that has no actual activity within Egypt.
While the defendants thought that the cover of caution protected them, the technical examinations of the first defendant's (the media figure's) mobile phone undermined all their defenses, as Egyptian security agencies found explicit text messages documenting the roles of the group, details of operations, and the distribution of financial amounts.
After being confronted with the seized evidence and phone conversations, the defendants collapsed and admitted to forming an organized gang, where the media figure exploited his connections to facilitate procedures, manage the group, and outline roles, while the other partners fabricated the counterfeit seals and attracted victims aspiring for job opportunities abroad.
